I would hope Shakib is just asking for a temporary break. Its not ideal, but if thats all it is, I'm OK with it. We dont know what his mental state is like, it seems he's mentally beat rather than physical. Unlike the Kohlis or De Villiers, he plays in the IPL, CPL, PSL, occaisional stints elsewhere and the only time hes not there is for international duties. Thats a lot of travelling.

He also travels alot for family as his wife and daughter live in the US.

The BCB seems to think there is a chance shakib might come back for the 2nd Test. I just hope he's back for the SL series, as that might mark the first time Bangladesh fields their strongest ever XI.

In the cricinfo article, Nasir was dropped because he underperformed in his comeback series. For Imrul, Soumya & Shabbir it wasn't a comeback series. So, theoretically, if Mahmudullah underperforms, he should get punted- again. Rubel is the Bradman of bowlers- average wise.

Shakib speaks! He sheds some light on his request for a break: "Tests will be the LAST format I retire from"

The U-19 team really struggling...lost a series 3-2 at home to the afghans and now have lost to the visiting Nepal side.

National team also in chaos...does not bode well for the 2019 world cup unless things change dramatically. Will be an interesting 12 months ahead with home Tests vs Sri Lanka, and away tours to WI and Australia plus the Asia Cup in India in October.

This is very unusual. Bangladesh have been strong at U19 level for a long time. Blip? Or do you think the impressive progress over the last 5 years or so (SA tour notwithstanding!) is now likely to plateau?

There is always going to be a plateu phase. The U-19 may be a blip. But at the same time the BCB has not been the most well organized board, and in recent years there are significan shortcomings in terms of talent development. Talent identification could be better, but is doing a reasonable job. Almost all of the national team players are from outside the main urban centers. That means we get talent from all over the country and also means rural or remote geography is not a disadvantage for emergence or selection. But developing that talent has been less than stellar. No A team tours in the last 2 years, very few for the U-19 boys as well.

The next couple of U-19 teams will be critical as our big trio of Shakib-Tamim-Mushfiq are all around 30 years old now and likely in the last third of their careers. It would be great if we could another 7-8 years out of all 3 of them, but there are no guarantees.

But the current selection panel are the dumbest we have seen from BD in a long while, and my gut feeling is they are taking orders from the idiot coach. The selectors weren't making as many stupid mistakes a year or two ago. Mahmudullah was picked over Nasir because of his technique? Well why was he dropped for Nasir in just the last series?
Well looks like it didn't take long. The idiot coach has decided to leave on his own accord (praise the Lord!).

Lends credence to my theory that there was serious friction between the HC and others (senior players, selectors, or BCB brass). Dont know what its about, but 99 times out of 100 I'm backing the players cuz they are the wheel that makes the entire engine run.

Word is Hathu will be coaching SL, and it will be interesting if he takes the job in time for the BD-SL series and able to give them an inside scoop on our team.

I wonder who takes over coaching ??

Not sure BD have the cash to attract a big name coach or if someone like Flower or Fleming would want to live in Dhaka ( I think we've had this discussion before Kriterion )

I wonder if they'll have a crack at Heath Streak ?? I know he's under contract with Zimbabwe but he had good results with their seamers so Im sure of he was available they'd be keen on him.

Maybe they might go after the 'Great Mangongo' :D

Cash is probably not an issue as Hathu was the 4th highest paid coach in the world and was making ~350K USD per year. I think SL media have repored he is takimg a pay cut to return home.

Fleming or Flower would be great but yeah living in BD is obviously the drawback. BCB rarely gets their first choice but i may also be due to te poor negotiating ability.

I dont know much about coaches. But i think a good technical coach with man management skills is vital.
