2018 Asia Cup (in UAE)

Post by Kriterion_BD »

6 nation tournament with 2 groups of 3, then a Super 4 round with the top 2 qualifying for the Final.

India sending a full strength side, minus Kohli - so batting is at 50% strength. The rest of the teams sending full strength sides.

Today Hong Kong squares off with UAE in the Qualifier Final for the last berth in the main tourney in Malaysia. I had been rooting for Nepal or Malaysia to qualify, and while both teams competed for signficant portions of the tournament, the top 3 sides were predictably HK, UAE, and Oman. I guess out of the HK and UAE, I'd root for UAE to make the tournament but it doesn't really make much of a difference. The groups are as follows

Group A = India, Pakistan, Hong Kong or UAE
Group B = Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan

Will Hong Kong get ODI status for these games???

Another example of why the current way the ICC grants ODI status is stupid and wrong, Hong Kong beat two other nations with ODI status to claim a spot in the Asia Cup.

Yeah the Asia Cup matches always have ODI status.

The Associates ranked 12-20 can all beat each other on the day. This time it was Hong Kong's day in the sun. The ODI status usually goes off the WC Qualifier final standings with the top 6 sides getting ODI status for the next cycle.

I feel the WCQ was a perfect example of what you said that any side can beat anyone, Hong Kong beat Afghanistan FFs and Afghanistan won the whole tournament whilst poor old Hong Kong lost their ODI status.

I remember at the start of the tournament saying I felt it wasn't fair that points accrued against sides that didn't qualify for the super sixes be dropped wasn't fair and would end up rewarding a side who had lost to a lessor side and dis-advantage a side who hadn't done so.

In the end Zimbabwe & Scotland gained no advantage by beating Hong Kong because they ended up behind Afghanistan by 1 point in the super sixes. If they both had that 1 point they both finish above Afghanistan.

At the end of the day, UAE/HK/Oman are all basically Pakistan D sides. So they are all basically at the same level. With HK playing against very strong India and Pakistan sides it will be interesting to see if the standard of such teams has improved in the last decade or so. 2008 was the last time any associates played in the Asia Cup. I suspect HK will get soundly thrashed by both India and Pakistan.

This just shows how much more Nepal needs to improve before becoming the next Afghanistan.

Asia Cup matches were always ODI status games dating back to 1986-1995 when Bangladesh was the Associate qualifier (we didn't get ODI status till 1997).

But now the ICC has ruled that all tournament matches will have ODI status. This new ruling is to correct the fact that Zimbabwe vs Nepal wasn't an ODI at the Qualifiers this year.

Sensible decision in the end.
