Logan Cup 2018: R2: Eagles v Rhinos & (deferred) Tuskers v Mountaineers

Post by CrimsonAvenger »

I did not realize this round is starting today. Just stumbled upon the scorecard: http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/8794 ... up-2018-19

288/5 at the end of day 1 for Rhinos. Pretty solid given the fact that Taylor failed. No Cremer in their line up though. Mavuta is back from SA and is in the XI.

Eagles - with that batting line up - are not going to win this. This is going to be a spectacular start to the season for the Rhinos.

Looks like this could be the best domestic season in terms of quality for 3 or 4 seasons with all the national team guys available.

If all the games go ahead

Tari doing well again opening and good runs by Mayavo and Madziva, also good to see Jongwe taking a couple of wickets.

Just to point out again how ‘unbalanced’ the domestic squads are the Rhinos have Cremer, Chisoro & Mavuta in their squad !!! IMO they’re the 3 best spinners in the country (Maybe Raza) and they’re all playing for the same side !!! Impossible to have all three play in the same game you would think so they’ll have to rotate whilst the Eagles don’t even bother playing a spinner because Mufudza is their only guy !!!!

The Eagles also have too many keepers Regis, Richmond, Gumbie and apparently Murray after Xmas !!!! Whilst the Tuskers have Handrisi

Interesting that PJ Moor is listed as captain not Tari ! Is that just a mistake by ESPNcricinfo? Or have the Rhinos decided to just let Tari concentrate on his batting?

I know they see him as a future captain but that shouldn’t be for a long time or at least until he’s cemented in the national side. The fact he’s trying to become an opener at the same time is all more the reason he shouldn’t be burdened with running the side as well.

We really needed a 5th franchise (RS). It would have provided opportunity for quite a few guys and added some real interest. Once you start shuffling players around the teams it takes a lot of meaning out of these games, regardless of how good the games were.

ZC spent a lot of money on that last U19 side, it must have been a couple of hundred grand or thereabouts. Personally I didn’t think the timing was quite right as it wasn’t a particularly strong group, but they’ve lost that momentum without the 5th franchise. There’s no long term plan it seems. Well there probably is but budgeting seems to not be their strong suit. There has to be a plan to keep our best school leavers. There’s no point in spending any money at all on u19 if firstly they’re not prepared for it with previous age group stuff, and secondly if they then watch them disappear afterwards.
You can’t make room for everyone but you have to snare the best of them.
I heard just now that there’s a young left arm seamer that is playing for Gauteng in the u17 at the moment. I hear he’s a good bowler, we need that guy. Curtis did the same thing, he played for Natal at age group. When you have guys not wanting to represent their country there’s a problem, ZC will be quick to point out lack of patriotism but hey need to look inwards because the black kids are also doing it.
Once again the big loss is Muyeye, we need this talented young man at all costs, he’s seriously good. The reality is that money is better spent snaring one talented guy than spending money on age group tours that may not have any prospects.

But they need to find money for both. Kids won’t put in the time unless there’s the prize of at least one tour at the end of the year. We need an administration that understands the importance of good schoolboy cricketers coming through the ranks. Bizarrely against all odds we keep finding a few of them, but they’re not getting enough exposure to tough cricket to really develop them. I keep thinking the cupboard is bare but then a couple of kids put their hands up, but none for a while have been able to reel off hundreds.
You can have 4 talented batters for example but maybe only one of them has the ability to convert starts to 100’s. It takes that extra mental strength that is hard to teach.
A nice looking 20-40 is better than nothing but we need the ones that get to three figures. There are hardly any boys that get more than a single hundred in a season here.
