Sri Lanka knock off South Africa at Kingsmead

Post by jaybro »

What a Test and what a result for everyone’s 2nd favourite side Sri Lanka, after beating swept at home by England, beaten convincingly by New Zealand & thrashed by Australia this result might be the biggest in Test history??

The innings by Kusal Perera might be one of the best of all time
also, especially after being hit in the hit by Starc on his last test it was quite a rebound.

I watched the last two hours of the match. Awesome game after they were 9 down. Easily one of the greatest knocks in the history of the game by Kusal Perera - given that he was up against Steyn, Rabada, Olivier and Maharaj (and Philander early in his knock on day 3). The way he tackled Steyn and Rabada was simply superb. Great support by Vishwa Fernando too.

I did not even rate Kusal Perera before this game, but boy, what a knock! Remember this is the same guy who was screwed wrongly by the ICC's anti-doping committee incorrectly and almost lost a year of cricket!

After a really tough year, this is a great result for SL.

On Faf's side, I think sticking with the old ball and continuing with Maharaj who was in good rhythm would have been a better choice in hindsight. It would have at least taken longer to get to the target and that meant more opportunities to get the wicket. Rabada and the new ball became easy pickings for Kusal who started reducing the target by dealing in boundaries intelligently.

Yea I'm not going to lie, I was glued to the TV.
What an absolutely fantastic knock from the Sri Lankan.
I can't believe how much this bloke bats like the legend Sanath; even his grip is the same.
To see Rabada, Steyn, Olivier and company crashed for boundary after boundary was something special.
Really did enjoy that and I am stoked for the Sri Lankans. The young left arm spinner needs to given some credit here, too. Kept it really simple, flighted the ball and really did spin it. His first delivery against Du Plessis set the tone for the rest of his spell. And he's only 20.
Sri Lanka will 100% come out of this rut but they need to stick with their players, much like the West Indies did when the mercaneries left the association for T20 cricket. They're now reaping the rewards...Sri Lanka can use this win as a template of what can happen if some faith is shown in there players. Bravo, and long may it continue. A strong Sri Lankan side is what we need, much like a strong West Indies test side.

What a sensational result for Sri Lanka in SA! 2-0. First ever Asian side to win a test series in SA. Winning it 2-0 is beyond impressive. SA have themselves to blame. Specially the 3 experienced batsmen who contributed next to nothing in an aggressive 5 batsmen, 5 bowler line-up: Elgar, Amla and Bavuma. They rarely put up a score for their world class bowling attack to defend.

Very good result for Karunaratne to begin with. They might now be wondering why they didn't think of him as a test captain earlier. Looks like a shrewd and intelligent character with a calm head, whose effects might have rubbed onto others in the team.

Great result for Sri Lanka and Test cricket the first ever Asian side to win a series in South Africa and a side which has been hammered all over the world and were in disarray coming into the series.

For South Africa they got what was coming to them, they're a very arrogant side and either didn't respect their opponents or they're too up themselves to realise their clear short comings.

I've said it many times here that Amla is well past it and can't bat No.3 anymore in Tests, especially if they're going to prepare pitches like they have been, they need someone at the top of their game to bat 3 and if they want to keep Amla they'll have to shuffle him down the order. The issue with that is they're already hiding their captain outside of the top 4 Faf and they are hell bent on playing 5 bowlers (even though their batting is shithouse) so QDK is batting @6.

SO if Faf is 5 and QDK is 6 then Amla must bat 4, but Bavuma is at 4 and he can't ever be dropped despite the fact he's only scored 1 century and that was four years ago, so what do they do? Ignore the fact Amla is too old and slow to bat 3 and that Bavuma is too shit to bat 4 and that they really don't have enough good batsman to play 5 bowlers and they get beaten convincingly at home to Sri Lanka

The fact Elgar has played well above his potential and that Markram has hit the ground running has papered over the cracks for some time now, but surely now is the time they'll have to have a good look at themselves and the make up of their side. At this very moment they have no world class batsman in their Test XI, Amla was but now isn't, Markram and Faf are Test Class but they're not Top 10 world class batsman right now, they haven't replaced Kallis, AB or Amla who were all world class at their peak.

Unless someone comes through soon they could be in for lean period in Test IMO, so much will rely on Markram unless soeone else comes through.

South Africa name their ODI side and again it's well short on batting, only 5 batsman picked in a 14 man squad, all well and good if your top order is firing but they're not

Faf du Plessis (capt), Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo , Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen

Contrary to what you posted Jaybro, SA have two of three batters in the wings who I would seriously consider putting up top.
Amla deserves some time and a little bit of patience after such a stellar career. He's earned the right to go through a lean patch and remain in the side.

. Hamza
. Pieter Malan
. Muelder
. Markram
. Van der Dusson
. Jannamen Malan

6 guys to focus on, in terms of batting.

We all know that SA are blessed with a battery of pace bowlers. Having Nortje and Ngidi coming into an ODI squad at the expense of Olivier is testimony to this, so that front is fine and dandy.

Well they should bring at least two of them in, if not three if they’re that good. Bavuma should be dropped, Amla too or at least moved down the order and they really need to start playing 6 batsman again until they have a top 5 all averaging between 40-50 and a solid batting allrounder
