Raza out of Zimbabwe's Bangladesh tour on disciplinary grounds

Post by Black Mamba »

Zimbabwe have left out Sikandar Raza on disciplinary grounds from the 15-man squad for the upcoming triangular series in Bangladesh, that involves Afghanistan as the third participating team. Raza, according to a Zimbabwe Cricket release, has been left out over pending disciplinary issues raised by captain Hamilton Masakadza.
"It is important that we support our captain, whether it is Masakadza or anyone else, by creating an environment in which we can be confident he will have the full support of all players, with everyone pulling in the same direction and able to trust each other. It is for those reasons that we have decided to leave Raza out," Zimbabwe convenor of selectors, Walter Chawaguta, said.
Zimbabwe squad for Bangladesh triangular series: Hamilton Masakadza (captain), Regis Chakabva, Richmond Mutumbami, Sean Williams, Neville Madziva, Tinotenda Mutombodzi, Tony Munyonga, Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara, Christopher Mpofu, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor, Ainsley Ndlovu, Timycen Maruma, Ryan Burl
The squad otherwise has experienced players Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams and Christopher Mpofu in addition to an array of younger players like Tony Munyonga, Ainsley Ndlovu, Ryan Burl, Tinotenda Mutombodzi and Neville Madziva. Of them, Munyonga and Ndlovu will be in line for their T20I debuts.
Masakadza, having announced his decision to retire after this series, will be leading the side for the last time. "I was looking forward to the T20 WC Qualifier in Dubai next month, but with Zimbabwe barred from taking part in the event, I feel that the time is right for the focus to shift to the next generation," Masakadza had argued while announcing his retirement.
Zimbabwe, still suspended by ICC over "political interference", couldn't compete in the qualifiers for the next year's T20 WC in Australia, so the focus is firmly on the 2023 World Cup in India - the next global tournament they can compete in.
"We are now shifting our focus to rebuilding a new team and to do that we must gradually blood in younger players and create a new culture that encourages unity, hard work, professionalism and excellence," head coach Lalchand Rajput said. "We will not make wholesale changes, as we definitely still need some of the experienced players to help the new generation find their feet in international cricket.
"It is important that we still field a competitive side - that is why we have a good mix of youth and experience in the team that has been selected for the Bangladesh tour."

Beggars belief really, and the irony in what the coach and Chawaguta are saying (whilst picking the same old recycled players) is hilarious.

Musakanda, Murray, Moor, Burl, Mavuta, Ndlouvu (spelling) Mumba, K-long and Meyers should be being thought of every single time the selectors get together now. Nice to see Jakiel in there and it will be interesting to see if he has any pace, or if he's just a 75mph trundler with a unique and different action. Either way, ignoring players with youth and picking players with mental baggage and age on their side is not a recipe for success.
Fuck it, TIZC

This is quite ridiculous, as if we have talent aplenty. But when have we seen a Zim team selection without a controversy or two? Pretty much means that things have gotten so bitter between Hamilton and Raza that they can't be in the same XI. Sad and ironic that they hold the Zimbabwean ODI record for the highest partnership.

I’m not sure what Raza may have said or done that the other whiteys didn’t. I’ve never seen the confidentiality clause on any contract, but I’d hazard a guess that the Zim one is about 97 pages long, you’d contravene a paragraph by breathing too loudly.

It’s been interesting listening to the Nasser Hussein documentary on KP. Obviously all those guys are free of their contracts and can speak their minds, or as much as an Englishman does vent, they’re spectacularly reserved.

Chawaguta’s version of blooding new young players is going to be a long process
They’ve got one guy only in the bank that may make a difference and that’s young Myers, and if they blunder and throw him in the deep end against a good side he will struggle. If I were them I’d give him a shot against Nepal or Singapore though, he’ll embarrass a couple of the stalwarts.

We’re in the same old rut with the same old people, it’s only going to get worse. Anyway nothing to do but to keep watching.

Disgusting not to see Raza in the squad. Leaving out their best T20 player is an absolute joke.

Is this the end for Raza? Or will he be back?

With absolute certainty our best T20 player is Williams, hands down. Raza is a damned useful player for us and a bit of a talisman, but he’s not as good as people think.
I would guess his exclusion is not because of what he said publicly, but what went on in private, which is just spite at the end of the day. Nothing will change here, nor should it. Players and staff voted for things to remain exactly as they are and it’s only right that we see that play itself out. There are no more excuses, people had their chance and they must now just keep quiet and deal with the consequences.

I'm convinced that if given an option between seeing Zimbabwe succeed, or boosting their ego, Mukhulani, the board and the selectors would use a hacksaw to cut their foot off it it meant the latter.

Mehluli Sibanda, Senior Sports Reporter

ALL-ROUNDER Sikandar Raza, who was omitted from Zimbabwe’s tours to Bangladesh as well as Singapore is said to have refused to play under retiring skipper Hamilton Masakadza, leading to the player being dropped from the squad for the two tours.

Raza was a notable absentee from the Chevrons squad for the two tours, with Zimbabwe Cricket announcing that he had been omitted over pending disciplinary issues raised by the captain. It has since been established that Raza approached a member of the Chevrons technical staff as the team was preparing for the trip to Bangladesh and told them that he was not willing to play for as long as Masakadza was captain, which left selectors with no choice but to leave the player out of the two tours. A trustworthy source indicated that Raza has ambitions of being captain and was frustrated that ZC continued to back Masakadza.

“Raza approached one of the coaches and said he was not going to play as long as Hamilton Masakadza was captain because he had lost confidence in him, the selectors thus had no choice but to leave Raza out of the team,’’ said our source.

Masakadza will lead the Chevrons in the triangular Twent20 series against Bangladesh and Afghanistan, which starts on Friday in what will be his last involvement in cricket as a player. Sean Williams has been appointed captain of a fairly young Zimbabwean team that is heading off to Singapore from Bangladesh. In Singapore, Zimbabwe are playing in tri-series with Nepal and the host nation.

This arrogant Pakistai must go back home. He is unfit to don Zimbabwe colours.

Imagine Tahir behaving like this in SA, or Khawaja/Fawad Ahmed behaving like this in Australia. The fans, media and former players would crucify them!

Even KP who is white and effectively European, but born in Africa, was not spared for mere idle talk and banter which leaked. Heck even the great AB is widely despised in SA now for such arrogance.

This guy is overprivileged and entitled. The Taibus, Hamis, Eltons, Utseyas and Matsis were slaying much greater bowlers and winning long before he arrived in Zimbabwe, and it will continue to be the case long after he leaves.

And let no one tell me they would tolerate such talk from a naturalised player, whatever the reason, because that would be a lie!

The mere fact that ZC have stood by Hami simply sends one message to Raza - If he is really principled then he must leave for good and not wait for Hami's absence in the next tour!

He was suspended before for ignoring a NOC, and now this. Plus insulted the same ICC he went to beg to expecting them to even listen to him. This man is a problem, and it's embarassing to think he was ever given the honour to captain the side.

You tolerate nonsense in Zimbabwe!
Voice of reason.
