2019/20 Domestic Cricket Season - Logan Cup, Pro50, Twenty20

Post by encore »

Insiders, any idea when the domestic season in Zimbabwe will be up and running?

Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry seemed convinced the game was in a better space in her interview.

With the string of retirements happening and soon to follow, this will be a HUGE season for the sport in Zimbabwe.

Make or break in many respects. A solid season with decent contracts for top domestic and young players is what is required.

I think ZC will have to do a lot of ruthless prunning like CA have been doing in Shield Cricket for the past two seasons.

I feel the top players among the likes of Prince, Mpofu, Zhuwao, Chinouya, Waller, Chamu, Vusi, Mutizwa, Shingi, Nyumbu, Garwe, Mboyi, Tiripano, Chapungu may have to be player-coaches, who will only play in one format suitable to their style(eg Waller-Cephas in T20s, Mawoyo-Shingi in FC, Vusi-Chamu can choose one), and in desperate circumstances eg sudden injury or A/XI/International call up. Others will just have to be culled completely.

Taylor, Mpofu, Sean, Craig, Elton, Raza, Chisoro(?), Maruma survive by virtue of still being part of the international set up or performing and not that old, plus necessary experience, but there has to be some wholesale housekeeping, with the Jongwes coming back(doesn't look like Northants want to give up on Muzarabani).

There is plenty of talent still left in Zimbabwe, and at least 60 of them need to be playing all three formats regularly asap.

If I was ZC I would not issue any central contracts until January 2021 season (beyond the two "robbers" Taylor & Jarvis of course), and focus strictly on domestic contracts and increased matches, plus u19 cricket camps and matches.

Of course that’s what normal competent board would do, backed of course by competent motivated staff and players. You’re not seriously thinking this season will be any different to the last 14 do you?
I predict it will be our most disorganized yet, with new levels of player disinterest.
Of course you get what you voted for.

Please list the players that you think have international talent that will now put their hands up.
You’re like that Prof Jonathon Moyo
None of which you say will happen, surely you must be getting bored of spin doctoring?

I want Taylor and Jarvis to quit and enjoy themselves elsewhere simply because no sane person should be subjected to what goes on there, it’s not an environment that you can survive in and come out mentally ok.
Your suggestion of central contracts next year means what, that players should survive on 200 a month whilst Makoni and co get 25k a month?
Again I kinda want that to happen a bit. They voted for it and they must suck it up.

Hey encore,
Could you please outline the pruning CA has done to the Sheffield Shield?
Each state plays 10 games per season on a home & away basis plus the final played by the top 2 teams. Been that way since 1982/83.
You sure you don’t mean the 50 over competition?

I was talking about players.

NB: Regarding matches, the context of my posts actually refers to increasing them.

Most of the domestic season will be rained out or cancelled due to fuel shortages. A handful of games featuring no name players should be sufficient for us to identify the next Bradman. Although it should be remembered that Bradman never even managed a single Logan Cup century.
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

Unfortunate part of it all.
