[Match Thread] Over 50s World Cup: Zim v Aus

Post by CrimsonAvenger »

So, we kick off our over 50s world cup campaign today against Australia. Given this is one of the very few world events we would be participating in, why not track our progress here? Looks like we won't have live commentary on Cricinfo and only innings updates, but there will be live streaming. Matches would also be available on the CSA YouTube channel later: https://www.over50scricket.com/wc-2020-fixtures-results

Zimbabwe Squad:

Darrell Goodwin (captain)
Eddo Brandes (vice-captain)
Tim Bartlett
Mark Burmester
Sean Edwards
Craig Evans
Brian Goodwin
Chris James
John Jameson
Greg McDonald
Rory McWade
Wayne Parham
Garry Spence
Mike Van Staden
Andrew Walton
Kenyon Ziehl

Scorer/manager: Sanjay Patel

Our Fixtures in the first round:

11/3/2020: Zim vs Aus
13/3/2020: Zim v SL
15/3/2020: Zim v NZ
16/3/2020: Zim v WI
18/3/2020: Zim v Can

Back to back matches on 15th and 16th! Could be difficult for the 50 year olds...

Overall fixtures: https://www.over50scricket.com/wc-2020-fixtures-results

Best wishes for the boys! Er... the grandpas...

Craig Evans is 50?

One of my friends uncles plays in the England team. I watched a game in Manly last year when the Aussies thrashed them.

The batting standard was extremely high. Extremely. The bowling however was comparatively weak.

I recall most players in the WC campaign were no names. I had the program with all the squads. I remember Ijaz Ahmed for Pakistan and Solway who played for the comets in Aussie domestic in the nineties.
Weirdly, there were a lot of ‘names’ that weren’t names.
By that I mean I remember an Astle and Doull playing for NZ, Nasser Hussains Bro for England, and about 5 other famous surnames that weren’t the famous one.
It’s like Ricky Ponting cricket on the PlayStation.
All brothers and shit.
It looks like Zimbabwe have continued this trend.
As they have at least three internationals, I would imagine they could be in with a chance of a few wins.
Cricinfo profile of the 'James Bond' of cricket:

FULL NAME: Angus James Mackay
BORN: 13 June 1967, Harare
KNOWN AS: Gus Mackay

'The' Gus Mackay.

Hero.
Sportsman.
Artist.
Player.

Wayne James and Robin Brown could have been included here.

SA look very strong, as you would expect from he hosts -- although Allan Donald prefers the role as coach instead of finding out whether lightning still strikes at 53.

Pakistan can also field almost an entire XI of former FC players.

I played against Peter Solway in a t20 in Canberra not long ago and he still hits them amazingly well. Fast hands and terrific placement in his 50 not that won them the game. Some of the best I've seen

Looks like some good work by Walton and Burmester, but an easy win for the more experienced side.
