Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has made arrangements for players and technical support staff members to undergo tests for COVID-19 ahead of the official start of training next Monday.

At least 40 playing and non-playing personnel were expected to be tested across the country this week.

The COVID-19 medical examinations are part of ZCโ€™s efforts to guarantee the health of players and staff members as well as to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes the deadly respiratory disease.

Cricket is one of the low-risk sporting disciplines that have been allowed to resume activities that, for now, are only limited to training.

Subject to government approval, ZC is planning to host Afghanistan and India for limited-overs series between July and August.

In preparation for those potential tours, a squad of 33 players has been drafted and only those who get the all-clear after undergoing the COVID-19 tests will officially start training on Monday.

The players will be split into small groups of not more than eight and they will practise in their respective provinces, starting with strength and conditioning sessions for the first three weeks before focusing on cricket-specific skills training.

To ensure that the risks associated with the cricket environment โ€“ field of play, training venue, changing rooms, equipment and management of the ball โ€“ have been mitigated before any training session or match, ZC has also put in place other preventative and containment measures that will be strictly observed.

For example, the disinfection and cleaning of cricket facilities โ€“ including change rooms, toilets, spectator stands, offices, media centres, walkways and car parks โ€“ has already been done across the country and will be regularly carried out.

Only one entrance will be used at each training venue and at that entrance there will be a mandatory temperature check on every player and support staff โ€“ if temperature is higher than the announced standard, the player or official will be immediately referred to the nearest testing facility for testing and excluded from training until they provide negative test results.

All players and support staff, as well as the other ZC employees, are being provided with personal protective equipment in the form of face masks, tissues, wipes and alcohol-based sanitisers.

The use of saliva to shine the ball will be prohibited, while there will also be no sharing of personal and sports equipment and wear, towels or any other containers such as water bottles and cups.

Poor quality test kits and thermometers- a pointless exercise. Why would they take players temperatures after hard exercise? Theyโ€™re not catching corona after two hours in the nets.
The logic is mind boggling.
Anyway itโ€™s good news.

A round-up of how the cricket community is reacting to the Covid-19 threat. Catch up on older newsfile entries here.

June 10

Zimbabwe's players and support staff will undergo tests for Covid-19 ahead of their return to training on June 15. According to a media release from Zimbabwe Cricket, a squad of 33 players has been put together and only those who pass the medical tests will start training from Monday.

Zimbabwe are set to host Afghanistan and India for limited-overs series in July and August, subject to government approval.

The players will practice in their respective provinces starting with strength and conditioning sessions for the first three weeks before turning to cricket-specific skills training.

As per the ICC guidelines, the use of saliva will be prohibited and all players as well as Zimbabwe Cricket employees will be provided face masks and alcohol-based sanitisers.

Afghanistan to begin month-long training camp starting June 7
Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mohammad Shahzad are among 22 players who are going to take part in a month-long training camp organised by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in Kabul starting Sunday.

The camp, an ACB release said, will be focused on "strengthening their batting, bowling and overall performance as part of their preparations for upcoming tournaments.

"This camp will be held under the relevant health guidelines and in close coordination with the ICC, WHO and the ministry of public health of Afghanistan to avoid the spread of COVID-19," the release said.

On Saturday, the ACB held a Covid-19 awareness meeting for players and other relevant officials at the board's head office to "educate them about the health guidelines to be maintained during the camp."

Afghanistan were scheduled to tour Zimbabwe and play the Asia Cup in the second half of the year but both look uncertain now, and a one-off Test in Australia's new summer schedule is now slotted for November 21 to 25 at the Perth Stadium.

Players participating in training camp: Asghar Afghan (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Hazrathullah Zazai, Karim Janat, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Naveen ul Haq, Shapoor Zadran, Qais Ahmad, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Azmatullah Omerzai, Samiullah Shinwari, Usman Ghani, Mohammad Shahzad, Sayed Shirzad, Darwish Rasooli, Zahir Khan Paktin, Farid Malik, Hamza Hotak, Sharafudin Ashraf.

I doubt we will be playing Afghanistan in July and India in August but I will be delighted if I am proved wrong.

Aren't Zim meant to be touring Australia as well? They can use that Zim player stranded in Australia to cut costs

Results from last weekโ€™s coronavirus tests on Zimbabwe players and coaching staff have all returned as negative, giving the entire squad called up for training the green light to get down to business.
With Zimbabwe planning to host Afghanistan in July-August โ€“ subject to government approval โ€“ a training squad of 37 that was called up to start preparing for the potential tour had to first undergo COVID-19 tests as part of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC)โ€™s efforts to guarantee the health of players and staff members as well as to curb the spread of the respiratory disease.
After all the players, as well as the coaching staff, got the all-clear, training officially started on Monday.
Due to national lockdown restrictions and also to ensure social distancing is strictly observed, the training squad is split into small zonal groups that are practising within their own provinces.
Bulawayo-based players got the ball rolling on Monday with a fitness test that was overseen by provincial coach Njabulo Ncube at Queens Sports Club.
On the same day, national fielding coach Shepherd Makunura took Tendai Chisoro through his paces at Masvingo Sports Club.
Harare has the largest number of players who have been split into two groups, with 14 of them training at Harare Sports Club and 11 at Takashinga Cricket Club under the national team coaching staff of fitness trainer Walter Karimanzira, batting coach Stuart Matsikenyeri and bowling coach Douglas Hondo.
The Takashinga-based players held their fitness test this Tuesday morning, with the Harare Sports Club group following suit in the afternoon.
In Manicaland, provincial coach Farai Chari is in charge, while national womenโ€™s team coach Adam Chifo is taking care of the Midlands players.
After undergoing strength and conditioning sessions for the first three weeks, the players will then begin focusing on cricket-specific skills training.
Apart from the COVID-19 tests, ZC has also put in place other preventative and containment measures that will be strictly observed to ensure that the risks associated with the cricket environment โ€“ field of play, training venue, changing rooms, equipment and management of the ball โ€“ have been mitigated.

This shows we probably only have enough decent players for no more than 4 domestic teams.
I'm surprised Shumba isn't there. Myers maybe is still focused on his final school year. They should have put the Chinaman in there as well
