There's only one thing Cricinfo is paid to do, and I assure you it isn't writing their own articles or finding scorecards.

Mutizwa's purple patch continues

Easterns 229 for 9 (F. Mutizwa 60, H. Masakadza 37, B. Mlambo 34, D. Hondo 8*, N. Mushangwe 2*; T. Kamungozi 3/58, E. Rainsford 2/22, B. Mugochi 2/38)
Day 1 of 4-day match

THE second round of the 2008/2009 Logan Cup tournament got under way in Harare on Tuesday, with Easterns playing Centrals at Old Hararians Sports Club and Northerns-Westerns at the Alexandra Sports Club.

At Old Hararians (OH), Easterns won the toss and opted to bat.

After posting 541 in their first and, as it turned out, only innings in their first round match against Westerns whom they beat by an innings and 275 runs at the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy ground on Wednesday, Easterns were expected to remain in the runs moreso against a Centrals side that was beaten within three days by Northerns on Wednesday.

When Johnson Marumisa was dropped by Alois Tichana on four, it looked as if it would be business as usual for the Steven Mangongo-coached outfit. But the opener was bowled by Zimbabwe pacer Edward Rainsford before he could use his life, to make it 11 for one in five overs.

His fellow opener, Bernard Mlambo, was joined by number three batsman Hamilton Masakadza and together they built the second best partnership for Easterns on the day 47 runs before Mlambo was caught by Eric Chauluka off the bowling of Tafadzwa Kamungozi. He went for 34 runs.

Masakadza himself made 37, the second highest for Easterns after the 60 posted by in-form batsman Forster Mutizwa.

The Zimbabwe wicket-keeper seems to be celebrating his international debut against Kenya in January with big hits since then. His tally on Tuesday came from 139 minutes of occupation and was crafted off 99 balls which included eight fours and one six. Mutizwas half century was off 85 balls, seven of them fours and one six, in 89 minutes.

He also featured in a 51-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Stephen Nyamuzinga (24).

Douglas Hondo (8) and Natsai Mushangwe (2) were at the crease when bad light put paid to play after 82 overs.

For Centrals, Zimbabwe A spinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi took three wickets for 58 runs in 27 overs, 11 of them maiden. Rainsford grabbed two for 22 in nine and Brighton Mugochi two for 38 in 17 overs with seven maidens.

Northerns 300 all out in 78.2 overs - (G.Cremer 74, E.Chigumbura 53 T.Taibu 43, C.Mpofu 2/31, T.Mupariwa 2/98 K.Dabengwa 2/58) Westerns 0/0 in 2.4 overs
Day 1 of 4 day match

WESTERNS were 0 for no loss in 2.4 overs in response to 300 all out set by Northerns in the first day of the second Logan Cup match played at Alexandra Sports Club on Tuesday when bad light and rain forced the stumps early still with 28 minutes of the innings to play.

Two half centuries by in-form Graeme Cremer (74) and skipper Elton Chigumbura saw Northerns hit 300 runs in 78.2 overs of some good cricket on a good batting wicket. Cremer, in particular was in valiant mood hitting 10 boundaries in his 96 ball 74. His partnership with number 11 batsman Admire Manyumwa (20 not out) of 62 was the best of the innings.

The Keith Dabengwa captained Westerns side who were on the receiving end of the punishing Easterns in the first round showed no signs of the timidity with which they were bowled out twice in one day by Easterns at the Academy grounds last week.

Westerns senior bowlers Tawanda Mupariwa, Christopher Mpofu and Dabengwa who all took two wickets each were as arrogant as bowlers can come in their dismissals. Mupariwa took the wickets of Ishmael Senzere (11) and Dean Mazhawidza (4) while Mpofu accounted for Cephas Zhuwawo (22) and Tatenda Taibu (43).

Regis Chakabva (15) and Chigumbura (53) were victims of Dabengwas unorthodox spin as Westerns ensured they bowled their opponents out in day one of the four day contest.

With Taibu slowly returning to form, Northerns looked much better after falling to 98 for 4 in 25 overs, a score that looked precarious but the arrival of the former national team captain and Chigumbura restored some respectability forcing the score board to tick before both fell. Cremer then took over the burden.

As Westerns tightened their hold on proceeding by taking wickets at intervals, the match slowly ebbed to the twilight with some delightful knocks from the swashbuckling Cremer who punished bowlers no end occasionally clearing the ropes with nonchalant ease. He stayed on the crease for 111 minutes.

Also notable was Taibus 43 that came off just 44 balls in 33 minutes with Chigumburas half century coming off 77 balls in 106 minutes of toil as bowlers pressured him to hitting some poor shots which he eventually did trying to sweep Dabengwa before Mark Vermuelen caught him at second slip.

Westerns resume batting on Wednesday morning hoping to chase down the score and hopefully post a considerable advantage. Openers Freedom Takarusenga and Tafadzwa Ngulube faced 10 balls for no score chasing 300.

Good news, he's been a successful bowler in domestic cricket, keeps the standards & competition up.

I'm glad Mugochi returned, it's important to have good bowlers in the domestic setup.
... which he eventually did trying to sweep Dabengwa before Mark Vermuelen caught him at second slip.
Here's an interesting comment and something which hasn't really been discussed on the forum. The state of fielding in Zimbabwe. I think generally our fielding is very good and comparable with the top countries - it always has been. The Zimbabweans have always been very athletic and capable in the field. I haven't seen the boys put down too many regulation catches in the outfield, it is a department we are strong in. We probably don't make enough of the half chances though - in the past we have seen the likes of Matsikenyeri (there's one by him which comes to mind) take some screamers but not so much now. But overall, fielding is not a problem. The 1%'ers, like saving boundaries, putting pressure on the batsmen by good saves close in and run outs we are very good at.

Slips fielding on the other hand is a concern. Normally we have Masakadza at first slip and Sibanda at second or third slip. I can't remember who else was fielding in slips during the Bangladesh series. Regardless, the slips fieldsmen (and Masakadza and Sibanda are the ones that immediately spring to mind) are always putting down catches. Has anyone else noticed this?

If Vermeulen is a specialist slips fielder then hallelujah, we really do need someone with safe hands at first slip at the very least. Hopefully it will then rub off on the others.

Nice to see Brighton Mugochi is back for Zimbabwe. It will make list of spinners in Zim a bit long along with led by LEGEND Price,Cremer,Utseya,Kamangozi,Maruma.

Infact B Mugochi is a member at ZCF.

And it seems that the wish of Train Driver also comes true.

I see that we have another new member this morning, bmugochi.

If that is you Brighton, THE superstar Brighton Mugochi, then hopefully you will consider coming back to ZC. I'm sure that you could learn a lot from playing alongside Ray Price and then take over from him in the Zim side of the future.
Brighton Mugochi has been a great spinner in FC level. He has got 43 wickets in 9 FC matches averaging 20!Very good indeed.Great to see Mutizwa is giving pace in his good form with a fifty. ;)

Westerns fail to capitalise on Northerns collapse

Day 2 of 4 Westerns 158 all out in 84.2 overs (M.Vermuelen 44, T.Ngulube 33 T.Mupariwa 24* A.Manyumwa 5/15 R.Price 2/43 G.Cremer 2/51)
Northerns second innings 12/2 in 6 overs (S.Mwakayeni 6 D.Mazhawidza 4*, T.Garwe 2* C.Mpofu 1/5 T.Mupariwa 1/7)

AFTER bad light and weather forced the close of the innings 28 minutes early on Tuesday with Westerns trying to reply to Northerns 300 all out, the Keith Dabengwa captained side collapsed all out for 158, still 142 runs behind in the second round of Logan Cup at Alexandra Sports Club on Wednesday to hand Northerns the initiative again.

Only batsman Mark Vermuelen offered some resistance with his laboured 44 off 97 balls as rising Zimbabwe A and Northerns key bowler, Admire Manyumwa tore into the batsmen taking five wickets for just 15 runs in 18.2 overs.

The Westerns top order was decimated for just 106 runs in 52.2 overs as Manyumwa in uncompromising mood removed one batsmen after the other forcing the opponents back into action despite resuming late due to the moist wicket.

Although Tafadzwa Ngulube offered some resistance in his 33 off 74 balls spanning 89 minutes, the damage had been done. But Manyumwa then trapped him leg before wicket to end the resistance. Spinners Ray Price and Graeme Cremer took two wickets each as Westerns really struggled for runs.

To atone for their poor batting Westerns who thought they had done enough in restricting Northerns to a chase-able score, they quickly removed openers Sam Mwakayeni and Ishmael Senzere for just six runs as Dean Mazhawidza and Trevor Garwe were left unconquered at stumps with an advantage of 154 going into the third day of Thursday.

In-form players follow the form book on Day 2 of Logan Cup

Easterns 255 all out (F. Mutizwa 60, H. Masakadza 37, B. Mlambo 34, D. Hondo 31; E. Rainsford 3/35, T. Kamungozi 3/58, B. Mugochi 2/38)
Centrals 108 for 2 (B. Chapungu 85, C. Chibhabha 16*, E. Rainsford 0*; P. Utseya 1/16, D. Hondo 1/32)

A valiant 85 from opener Bothwell Chapungu put Centrals in a good position to neutralise the Easterns first innings on the second day of their Logan Cup match at the Old Hararians Sports Club in the capital.

After an almost a run-a-ball half century that included eight fours and one six, Chapungu proceeded with his good work with the bat but fell 15 runs shy of the big one when he was caught by Forster Mutizwa from the bowling of Zimbabwe captain Prosper Utseya.

His 85 was made in 138 minutes in the middle and came off 102 balls, 13 of them fours and one six.

The Zimbabwe A batsmans contribution with the bat anchored the Centrals innings of 108 for two. Chapungu was also a team-man, building two partnerships of 50 first with fellow opener Alois Tichana (3) and then Chamunorwa Chibhabha (16*).

Earlier, Centrals dismissed Easterns, who won the toss on the first day on Tueday and opted to bat, for 255.

After posting 541 in their first and, as it turned out, only innings in their first round match against Westerns whom they beat by an innings and 275 runs at the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy ground last Wednesday, Easterns were expected to remain in the runs moreso against a Centrals side that was beaten within three days by Northerns on Wednesday.

His fellow opener, Bernard Mlambo, was joined by number three Hamilton Masakadza and together they built the second best partnership for Easterns on the day 47 runs before Mlambo was caught by Eric Chauluka off the bowling of Tafadzwa Kamungozi.

Number 10 Douglas Hondo also made a worthwhile effort of wagging the tail with his unbeaten 31that came off 36 balls, five of them fours.

For Centrals, Zimbabwe A spinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi took three wickets for 58 runs in 27 overs, 11 of them maiden. Rainsford grabbed three for 35 in 11.4 and Brighton Mugochi two for 38 in 17 overs with seven maidens.

As an Australian cricket tragic, I revel in these times of internet technology so I can get an update of overseas first class scores. As a labour of love I have been collating my own set of first class records that are not easily found elsewhere. Therefore, I offer this information that Mark Vermeulen (after his 44 for Westerns) is now only 35 runs short of Grant Flower's Logan Cup record of most runs of 2608 -since this competition was given first class status. Vermeulen's average is mid 40s, well short of Flower's 70 odd, but he is still a great within this competition.
Also, Raymond Price (at the start of round 2)was 5 wickets short of Gary Brent's record of 133 wickets.
My records have never been audited so I may stand corrected but I felt it needed to be stated as very little of Zim cricket is promoted & these are significant milestones.
Also, I was inspired when I read Forster Mutizwa & B. Mugochi's first class stats in other posts.
Finally, I must ask of the whereabouts of Vusi Sibanda & Friday Kasteni. I understand that last season they were in Australia & missed your season, but what of this year? I acknowledge that your first class teams are reduced to 4 so obviously some of last years players are vying for limited positions. Sibanda hasn't played 1st class cricket in Zim for a couple of years but still gets picked internationally. Just a confusing situation when there is limited information available.
Thanks
