I feel like I did a similar thread 10 years ago and said we should just pick everyone averaging over 40 and the top 6 pick themselves. I think at that point we had Hamilton, BRMT, Ervine, Williams, and then a couple of high 30s to make up the numbers.
Now there's fewer options but having a threshold isn't a terrible idea.
Get your FC average to 35 fellas.

Re: Test Batting Options - Stats
Don't see the problem with adding something different to think about. Let's face it , there's not much to get excited about with the local players at the moment is there ? You've done a great job with this , not only is the batting a problem but the bowling stocks are thin as well.secretzimbo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 12:47 pmAnother thread where nobody talks about the players the thread is actually about, and everyone instead talks about overseas player again …..![]()

Re: Test Batting Options - Stats
I think what the stats do show is that the youngsters Madhevere, Shumba, Madande, Munnyonga etc - have been given chances for a reason. Their records so far in domestic cricket are a cut above a lot of the more established guys. Marumani after a terrible start to his red ball career is averaging well over 40 in the last 12 months too.
The benchmark should realistically be 30, although that is obviously pretty low too. There's no way guys like Tsiga, Makoni and Gumbie should be anywhere near the squads with those kind of career number thats for sure.

Re: Test Batting Options - Stats
The numbers aren't helped by the fact that a lot of the pitches used in domestic cricket nowadays are low-quality pitches that favour bowling. At HSC they usually use the dodgy pitches on the edge of the square for domestic matches. The rare occasions they use Kwekwe or Queens usually result in low-scoring affairs too. OH can be good for batting but they never finish an innings anyway because of the permanently flooded outfield

Makoni is only in the squad because of his surnamesecretzimbo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 10:38 pmI think what the stats do show is that the youngsters Madhevere, Shumba, Madande, Munnyonga etc - have been given chances for a reason. To be honest our top 6-8 is pretty obvious. Just by the naked eye.

Some of them haven’t lived up to what they can do but you can see they have it in them.

Agree with this but wouldn't have Marumani in there atm, Madande for me would be in the 8ZIMDOGGY wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 11:07 pmMakoni is only in the squad because of his surnamesecretzimbo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 10:38 pmI think what the stats do show is that the youngsters Madhevere, Shumba, Madande, Munnyonga etc - have been given chances for a reason. The minimum standard for selection should be a FC average of 40, not 30. A guy who averages 35 in the Logan Cup, will average 25 tops at Test level. Possibly even less.
Madande has one of the highest averages outside the Big 4, so he should be an automatic selection.

As they say, you can only make do with what you’ve got. In other words, you can’t pick players averaging over 40 if you haven’t got any.Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 11:53 pmThe minimum standard for selection should be a FC average of 40, not 30.
