Doubt over Taibu's availability
Steven Price in Harare
November 15, 2008
Zimbabwe's selectors are sweating on the availability of former captain Tatenda Taibu for the five-ODI series against Sri Lanka starting in Harare on Thursday.
The squad is due to be named after the four-day match between Zimbabwe Select XI and Sri Lanka, which ends today at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The team will then fly to Harare for training with Zimbabwe A, who are set to play the tourists in a warm-up match at Queens Sports Club on Monday.
Taibu, an experienced top-order batsman and wicketkeeper, was left out of the team for the current game after selectors said he was not in the right frame of mind to play.
A very reliable source within the Zimbabwe camp said the chances of Taibu being available were slim. "He has issues with the board and at the same time in his private life, he is really going through a difficult time, it would not be a surprise if he is not available to play against Sri Lanka," the source said. If Taibu is absent, Regis Chakabva, another diminutive wicketkeeper, will be given the duties.
Veteran left-arm spinner Ray Price, who was omitted for the four-day match, is expected to be named in a squad which is again woefully short of experience.
Good News And Bad News
Re: Good News And Bad News
Looks like my criticism was a bit premature when it came to availability of ray price. Looks like he does figure in their plans after all..Phew

Re: Good News And Bad News
Hope taibu does come back into the reckoning and also sibanda plays if he is deemed fit by medical staff. Price, taibu and sibanda are our three top players at the moment. ( as well as masacadza and chigumbura)
Could well spring a shock in the shorter version with these guys in the squad, Sibanda has been playing brilliantly the past couple of years

Re: Good News And Bad News
Dare I say: no news here.
Given the allegations against him, I don't think Taibu should be playing - ZC have suspended players (black and white) for far less than assault charges, and until that matter's cleared up it's right that he doesn't take part.
As for Price - I think we're beginning to get a bit paranoid when it comes to selection, although maybe not without cause. But when we (and by "we" I mean everyone who watches Zimbabwe, not just folks here on the boards) get to the stage where an announcement that someone's being rested for a tour match turns within days into them being dropped for life, then we need to step back and take a deep breath. While nothing ZC does will ever surprise me, I do think sometimes we need to wait for formal team lists before beginning to panic.
