ZC confident of franchise cricket rewards
MANAGING director of Zimbabwe Cricket, Ozias Bvute is confident the advent of franchise cricket will create an enabling environment for ripple development of the game when the system wedges into place from the beginning of June.
Speaking in an exclusive interview to the website, Bvute, a pragmatic cricket administrator of note said that his board had decided to have these community based teams so that they are able to tap the best diamond that could be hidden is some pockets of the jungle in our communities.
“We are taking the game back to the community where we give them the ownership and therefore the responsibility to prove their abilities in the game. It is for the community to run the game professionally, retaining and paying the necessary staff for the project to develop.
“It is in our view the best possible way of getting everyone in the community involved in the game for its benefit. Players would be allocated to the respective five regions namely Easterns, Westerns, Northerns, Southerns and Centrals with their respective Chief Executive Officers, coaches and supporting staff as an entity ready to do the job,” Bvute told the website.
In a complete departure from the old system where the mother body handled all aspects of the game from policy making to implementation, the new system, said Bvute would allow for the convergence of ideas in the communities.
“We will split the 10 provinces into five provinces in order to manage them to benefit their teams and widen the catchment area. All available players would be given the necessary contracts by their regions. ZC as the controlling board has put out a policy document detailing all expectations with clear working timelines on what has to be done and when,” he added.
Bvute, a firebrand cricket administrator with a modern style of a pantomine enforcer said the ZC secretariat will identify individuals who can fit the bill for critical positions in the five franchises. He admitted that they have already identified the five CEOs for the provinces but will announce them in due course, perhaps on the June 1 when the systems officially roll out of the barnstorming laboratory.
In incidences of individuals who already have contracts with ZC but will have been identified for positions in the franchise will have to resign to get a new contract in the franchise.
The new franchise will have all the necessary structures from the CEO, financial administration and all other structural necessities including grounds-men, curators and coaches. They will be fully independent although ZC retains the epicenter of authority in matters of policy and general administration of the game.
“We found this to be an opportune moment and time for us to begin the project because we have a task force timeline of ensuring that this be in place before the beginning of the 2009/10 season in August. Like I said before, the CEOs will be announced on or by June 1 2009,” added the man at the helm of the ZC secretariat.
The ZC Managing Director, a man so resolute in his beliefs that he is more than ready to swim with the sharks without the fear of being eaten alive, told the website that the financial geography is such that whatever grants they get is equally distributed to the five franchises for the purposes of development and day to day expectations of running the project.
On the issue of the Cricket Academy, Bvute said it will remain independent with franchises free to use some players from it and returning until such a time the said players are ready to graduate. It is a project they will never abandon to nature for it is the bedrock of the future of Zimbabwe cricket.
Bvute took the opportunity to praise the coaches for a job well done in the just ended season which has been one of the most competitive in recent years. “We are encouraged by the level of play. It has gotten better and better and we need them to spend more and more time on the fields playing. That is the only way of doing it.
Said Bvute: “To assist them achieve the best, we have come up with this franchise idea at which the players can now play up to 16 games thereby lengthening the season and we believe that is one of the ways of getting the players improve their game to compete well with the international world”
ZC will continue to give the provinces as much support as they have always done with the assistance of some of the games’ high tech artisans such as Dave Houghton and Andrew Waller, although other will follow in the intervening months of the grand project.
“We will continue to engage the specialists in all facets of the game as a way of giving our players the best possible assistance in this project. Journeymen such Kenyon (Ziehl) and Givemore (Makoni) will continue with both or more roles until such a period all things have been put in place.
“The challenges of running the franchises should be of interest to them and with the level of improvement that we noted in the season this year, it would be very interesting to see the growth and development and better the composition of both national team and Zimbabwe A.
“Some young players like spinner Natsai Mushagwe, Mbekezeli Mabuza, Foster Mutizwa, Admire Manyumwa and Shingi Masakadza have shown so much potential and class that the future of our game is on the right track. I am very excited about this and we will not go wrong,” Bvute signed out.
There is no frankness without wisdom and the bravado and of conviction in Bvute’s mind mirrors a vision whose limit is the sky. With a plethora of calamities firmly in the back burner of the game at ZC, this new kid on the block (franchise) has unmasked the mysterious secrecy of even the women’s underwear mantra.
