Congratulation to Charles Coventry for the world record. It was indeed an innings of a lifetime.

I agree, Utseya could have taken a single in place of two in the 4th ball. He can't hit the ball in another sense. If Coventry was in the striking end in the 5th ball also, he could have easily went to the double century mark.

Shame Utseya !

Coventry sets record

By Mehluli Sibanda

ZIMBABWEAN batsman Charles Coventry went into the history books when he scored 194 runs not out to equal the world record for the highest individual score in One-Day International cricket but saw his effort go down to waste as Zimbabwe lost by four wickets in the Grameenphone Cup match against Bangladesh at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.
The win by Bangladesh means the visitors have clinched the Grameenphone Cup, after just four of the five matches after taking the series 3-1, reducing the last match at Queens Ground to a dead-rubber.

Coventry, who shared the man-of-the-match award with Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal, faced 155 deliveries, hit 16 fours and five sixes on his way to equalling the record set by former Pakistan batsman Saeed Anwar who scored 194 runs against India during the 1996/1997 season.

Zimbabwe posted what looked like a defendable 312 in their allotted 50 overs but a century by opener Iqbal saw Bangladesh home with 13 balls to spare.

After Zimbabwe captain Prosper Utseya had won the toss and opted for first use of the track, Zimbabwe did not enjoy a good start.

Mark Vermeulen (5), Hamilton Masakadza (21), Brendan Taylor (9) and Sean Williams (4) fell cheaply.

It was left to Coventry who came in at number three to take Zimbabwe to a commanding total. Coventry was given a life on 13 and went on to make full use of that let off. He put up a flawless batting display and featured in a 107-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Stuart Matsikenyeri who was Zimbabwe's second highest run scorer with 37 runs.

Needing 6.2 runs an over, Bangladesh had their foundation laid by their two openers, Iqbal and Junaed Siddique.

If Zimbabwe had to win the match, they had to take early wickets but they failed to do that. They only found the breakthrough when Bangladesh were on 68 runs when medium pace bowler Masakadza had Siddique caught by Sean Williams with the ball bouncing off the fielder's hands before he eventually held onto it to send Siddique to the pavilion for 38 runs.

Mohammad Ashraful was the second to go with the score on 94 runs when left arm spinner Raymond Price had him taken by Coventry for 10 runs.

A third wicket stand between Iqbal and Raqibul Hassan brought the Bangladesh chase back on track. Hassan eventually fell for 33, bowled by Price while captain Shakib Al Hasan went for 24 runs, dismissed by Masakadza.

Iqbal finally fell for 154 off 138 runs when Price had him caught by substitute fielder Vusumuzi Sibanda. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim followed shortly for 15 runs, given out leg before wicket to Utseya but it was a matter of time before Bangladesh romped to victory.

Mahmud Ullah Riad and Naeem Islam sealed the victory for Bangladesh.

Zimbabwe's loss yesterday will bring a lot of questions on why the selectors have chosen to strengthen the batting and weaken the bowling.

Zimbabwe's bowlers failed to convince in this series.

Coventry faced 156 deliveries,
hit 16 fours
and seven sixes

And he was dropped twice on 13..rather lucky 13 and 137.
