18 Months on...........

Post by zimfan1 »

https://www.dailynews.co.zw/articles/20 ... holarships

18 months ago, Nick Welch, Eddie Byrom, Kyle Hopper, Brad Evans and Richard Lock left Zim to take up scholarships in the UK.

However 18 months down the line they are now nearly all 19 years old and not one of them looks like they will have a career in cricket, Byrom being the closest as he is a regular in Somerset 2nds.

Can any of the locals e.g Flakeman, Googly, Cock and Gargmel etc update to how these boys are getting on and whether they still think they can have cricket careers?

Many Thanks :D

There's a certain irony that if they all were to come back, together they could do alot to empower and re-energize Zimbabwean cricket to bring it back.

These guys are wasting their time in England. England has so many talented guys coming through the system, foreign kids just get lost. They would be better off coming back to Zimbabwe and playing international cricket, instead of ending up in the Lancashire village league.

They may all have left but not all of them were that good.

Welch and Byrom the only ones with real potential I think. May have changed since I last saw but Byrom came and played a bit late last year and didnt too well in our good 1st league cricket. No sarcasm, our 1st league is good cricket.

should we even think about these kids, imho i think
they will only come back if they fail to make it in
england which is guaranteed they all wont make it
there maybe 1 will play for england or 2 @ most
but will be quickly discharged off eg gary ballance
Hoppers dad is an avid supporter of zim cricket maybe
his son will come back but as flakeman said they were
not all class & miles away from murray, mashinge, snyder
& ives who has a century in the first league to his name
I believe we have to move on to the next generation
which might not be as talented but some good
cricketers in there schardendoff, roche, robinson,
tigere, milne, madhevere etc or they will be given
scholarships too

Our deepest regret will be brad evans in the future
top quality lad
