In an ordinary world about 4 of these guys would be looking at a FC contract, wetting their feet in Twos and club cricket and being eased into One’s. Instead perhaps one or even two of them are going to get a senior cap in a month’s time.

I don't think we have anything to lose. They have both played in Bangladesh before, it is not part of the crucial ODI championship. Might as well see what they can do.

Remember Hamilton, Taylor and Williams were dropped in when they were 18 (whatever the circumstances) and held their own. Why not take the risk and possibly get a player who can play for the national side for the next 15 years?

I’m not disputing that. Those were extraordinary circumstances back then and we’re now in the same position 15 years later?

I remember those guys back then and they were better than these guys now.

Not quite, we had a massive generation gap with no experience to guide the youngsters. At least we now have the likes of BT and Craig to mentor the batters and Jarvis and Mpofu to mentor the bowlers. Big difference to when Taibu was the oldest at around 23. In fact until Brent and Price came back the average age but have been around 22.

I tend to agree with Zimfan1 it’s worth sending these guys (Shumba & Wes) to Bangladesh, they’ve got loads of talent & they’ll be key parts of the side for the next decade plus.

Even if they don’t get a game over there it will be a great experience for them, the chances of using 15 guys in a 3 match ODI series is slim anyways so it can’t hurt to send them IMO

Not sure the collective was better, Taylor and Williams were stand out talents but we had some dross around them.

Think back to the likes of Maregwede, Mahwire and Hondo (Who I never rated). I would argue the current squad has more depth than in 2004 after the walk out.

The big difference is now we have experience on the first class circuit. The youngsters must be benefiting from playing alongside the likes of Mpofu, Garwe, Maruma, Nyumbu, Chisoro, Shingari who even though are not international quality have all played cricket in the UK and have experience to pass on.

In 2004/05 there was no one.

This Bawa kids appears to have something. Will surley be skipper for the next under 19 world cup. I wonder if his performances will get him a scholarship to South Africa or the UK?
