Centurions start with an impressive win
7:30am Thursday 30th April 2009
SULLY Centurions started their defence of the Premier League Championship last Saturday with a tremendous victory over the much fancied Newport side at Sully.
On a very cold afternoon Newport won the toss and elected to bat, with former Glamorgan batsman Ian Thomas attacking the bowling from the word go, hitting the first ball for 4.
Centurions had Zimbabwean Ian Nicholson making his league debut and he claimed his first wicket when Rhett Jones caught Hassan for 14 with the score on 37.
Thomas and Clayden, the two experienced players, took the score to 64 but at this point Centurions took 2 wickets when Thomas was caught by Evison off Andrew Davies and Wood was bowled by Ryan Sylvester for 0.
Centurions bowlers now took control and despite a 45 run partnership between Clayden and Millichip, runs were hard to come by with Andrew Davies and Tom Evison bowling superbly.
The score reached 110 and then 4 wickets fell for the addition of just 2 runs. Jamie Sylvester got in on the act trapping Millichip lbw for 28, then the wicket Centurions wanted, fell on the same score as Clayden was caught by Reddy for 26 off the impressive Evison.
Two runs later Roberts and Cleeve were both lbw to Evison whose break in North Wales certainly seems to have done him the world of good.
G Thomas and Tudge added an invaluable 41 runs for the 8th wicket before Davies had Thomas caught for 20. Tudge was next to go for an excellent 31, caught off Nicholson with the score on 169. Two runs later Davies wrapped things up when Ainsworth was caught behind by the impressive Lovering as the visitors were all out for a useful for not big score of 171.
Centurions innings made a disastrous start as the in-form Ryan Sylvester was lbw to Ainsworth off the second ball. Jamie Sylvester joined Andrew Davies, taking the score to 29 before he was bowled by G Thomas for 11, not yet in his stride with the bat.
The in-form Lloyd Smith continued where he left off last year and although losing Andrew Davies for 27 with the score on 44, along with debutant Ritchie Reddy he produced the foundation for a Centurions victory before he was lbw for 34.
Gareth Sullivan joined Reddy and it really looks as if he has come to the party this season. Together they produced the match winning partnership with Reddy hitting a fine 41 as they took the score to 137 before he was caught off G Thomas.
Although Evison went for 8 at 152 Sullivan showed how much he has matured, leaving the fireworks to Richard Jones who hit three 4s and a 6 as Centurions got home by 4 wickets and 7 overs to spare. Gareth Sullivan finished on an excellent 29 not out, hopefully a sign of things to come.
Newport 171 all out. I Thomas 33, N Millichip 28, M Clayden 26. T Evison 3-19, A Davies 3-24, I Nicholson 2-55.
Centurions 175-6. R Reddy 41, L Smith 34, G Sullivan 29 not out, A Davies 27, R Jones 20 not out. G Thomas 3-31.

Re: Ian Nicolson
Okay Ian now things are okay, how about you come back and give Zimbabwean Cricket another shot ??iannicolson wrote:hi guys sory i havent been on in a while, im currently in australia playing club cricket and next season i am going to play in the premier division in cardiff, wales
at the moment i dont plan on going back to zimbabwe to stay as we all know that certain individuals at the top are still their and cricket is not being run properly until such a time i will be playing elsewhere, i still wish to play for zimbabwe and am very eager too play its just that the standard of cricket is a joke both domestic, logan cup when they last played and all others included, the national side is a joke as i know their are ex zim players in the country just waiting for a change so they could come back , anyways keep well ian

Where've ya heard that Kartik ??kartik wrote:Ian Nicolson: Weighing up my options to go play cricket in zim if i dont get work soon
Excellent news from a Zimbabwean perspective as it's another good, home grown fast bowler considering a return. However it's a shame he can't find work as a cricketer. How fast is he...
Re: Ian Nicolson
Thats his facebook status mate.I have actually no idea how fast can he bowl but it will be good to have him back. Also dont know where to put this but Dion Ebrahim wont be playing for the tuskers as he has been dropped by the tuskers and Sean Williams will be playing against Netherlands and Canada.sloandog wrote:Where've ya heard that Kartik ??kartik wrote:Ian Nicolson: Weighing up my options to go play cricket in zim if i dont get work soon

So it looks like Ebrahams chances of reaching the big satge again look pretty slim. To be honest though, it's no great loss.kartik wrote:Thats his facebook status mate.I have actually no idea how fast can he bowl but it will be good to have him back.

But to hear the news of Williams playing against Canada and the Netherlands is a huge plus for us. If we can get him into some kind of form, he'll be ideal to take the number 3 position in the side.
Again, excellent news about Nicholson. The more pace the better
