Record breaking Taranaki batsman Dion Ebrahim will leave the province next week to take up a high performance coaching job at Canterbury.
Ebrahim, 35, takes over the role from former international Paul Wiseman and will focus predominantly in the coaching and leadership of of age-group squads as well as working with the Canterbury 'A' squad.
"It's very exciting," he said. "I wasn't actually on the look out for a new position or a new job, it just sort of came across my desk after I got a call from Canterbury Cricket."
Although Canterbury wanted him in the job several weeks ago, Ebrahim wanted to make sure contingency plans were in place at New Plymouth Boys' High School where he was the director of cricket.
He will be with the first XI on Saturday when their premier one-day season starts with an match against Woodleigh. Ebrahim will then head south on Sunday.
"I had a lot of mixed emotions about taking up the position but from a career perspective, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
"I'm really looking forward to working in a professional [cricket] environment."
Ebrahim arrived in Taranaki in 2006 to take up a as Hawera United's professional player following a 29-test career for Zimbabwe that also included 82 one-day internationals.
He played 51 times for Taranaki and leaves as the record scorer of centuries having brought up his eighth in January, one more than Brian Richards and Dean Robinson.
The decision to move to Christchurch, where he work out of offices opposite Hagley Oval, was also aided by the fact he thought the "door appears shut" with Central Districts.
"I also didn't get any representative roles with Taranaki, either. But as I said, this all came about pretty quickly."
He still intends on following the progress at Boys' High with "one-eye" although he expects time will be at a premium in Canterbury.
His fiancee, White Ferns all-rounder Kate Broadmore, will follow him south early next year.
