485. Who is this (Dale Steyn lookalike?) former FC player who was touted as a big all-round prospect around the turn of the millennium? Needless to say, he drifted away from the sport, but is still in Africa.

That's absolutely correct!cricket_22001 wrote:Is it Terry Denyer? ( sharing the same Christian name as Terry Duffin)
Terence Denyer seems to have impressed as an opener and leg spinner for his school Hillcrest according to his Cricinfo profile description: http://www.espncricinfo.com/zimbabwe/co ... 55386.html
He played a couple of seasons for Manicas but was successful mostly with his leg spin. But was probably playing when we had the golden era of spin bowling going on - Paul Strang, Andy Whittall, Brian Murphy, Doug Marillier, and a young and upcoming Ray Price were all playing at the time.
Looks like he went into Civil Engineering and is currently the director of a company at JoBurg.

Re: Zimbabwe Cricket Photo Quiz
Season's greetings to all forum members.
With the reference to Terry Denyer's cricinfo profile, may I mention Nyasha Chari's profile( whose photo featured recently). There is a reference to a latest article, which is a John Ward profile. This is one of many pieces Ward did. As an interested overseas follower, these articles were invaluable to be introduced to these players.
It is with morbid reflection I draw you to parts of the article. Ward states Chari is a product of the development scheme. Does such a scheme exist now? He spent time at Dennis Lillee's pace foundation in Chennai, India. Finally, his ambition was to represent his country. His proudest ambition was to represent his country at age levels & be part of the CFX Academy.
Although he had injuries, Chari was lost to cricket after 11 FC games. What a waste of resources & an unfulfilled story of what might have been.

Re: Zimbabwe Cricket Photo Quiz
I remember the likes of Friday Kasteni, Regis Chakabva and a couple of others went to Cricket Australia's centre of excellence around 2004-05. I think even Chawaguta accompanied them for coaching expertise. But yes, you are right, such opportunities have stagnated.cricket_22001 wrote:It is with morbid reflection I draw you to parts of the article. Briefly heard Mike Holding yesterday in the SL-SA match and he pointed out another important aspect (he is horrible at times, but he has some points too) that the current generation of cricketers are missing. Tours by FC teams - especially the English counties - that used to happen 20 years ago. They would go and play FC teams / A teams of other countries. This happened at Zim too, and Holding pointed out that the challenge in such a thing was greater than the A team tours. Because these county teams had even test players in them that you had to face. They presented even bigger learning opportunities than the A team tours where inexperienced of one team are pitted against the inexperienced of the other...
Re: Zimbabwe Cricket Photo Quiz
A county side would hand our national side an ass whipping. There's no incentive for them to come here anymore. They have such an intense season that I think many of them like to take a bit of a break after their season. Some teams start some pre season stuff in January and we would have provided an idea venue in the past. SA is on their radar now q because of the exchange rate and decent facilities and opposition. Basically where we used to be in the distant past. I enjoyed watching Brad Wadlan play here, he's a decent cricketer that probably should have been given an opportunity to play FC in England but it goes to show how tough it is to break into the mainstream there. I found an interesting article-
http://www.thecricketpaper.com/news/clu ... -counties/
where he rues the lack of opportunities given to the minor county players.
Guys like Pettini and Wadlan were good for our cricket, but we can't even guarantee overseas players a single game because we can't even start our season on time. Trenchard and Price were good for our game as well, they were really combative in your face players that we so desperately need, but they became disillusioned and moved on a while ago.
