[OD Match 2] Kenya v Zim A
Re: [OD Match 2] Kenya v Zim A
I am happy Murray is in and making his way. We so need him for the future.

Well, nobody is casting them aside. But they haven't taken their chances. Criticism is well founded. They haven't scored much in the current domestic season, they had just 1 decent match each out of the 5 played against the UAE, and 2 failures now against Kenya. In fact, there isn't much of a case against Musakanda's exclusion from the national team too, based on current form. Burl is in equally bad shape and shouldn't be there too. They are the future. If they fail so regularly, it is a major cause for concern.sloandog wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2018 10:55 pmListen, one thing everybody needs to realise with Ryan Burl, is that he has the minerals to be a success. I watched his hundred last summer and the kid is pure class when he gets going. He's a precious talent and is (whether people like it or not) a future top order batter.
The only place i can see him slotting in, however, is up top. I think he has a deficiency in rotating the strike, and gets himself stuck.
But we need to remember, what cricket have these kids played? Hardly any! Tari hasn't fired but he has the raw talent which we need.
I'm calling for some patience and some faith here. They are both so so young and inexperienced, but at the same time, they need to take golden opportunities like they have been given here against Kenya. Ryan Murray showed today why he's so highly thought of. A genuine wicket keeper and a more than handy batter is quite simply the anomaly we current lack.
To summarize, these kids have the talent, they have time on their side, but they need to show it, and they need to show it now.

Mavuta is simply too erratic. I hope he doesn’t play for Zim anytime soon, he needs to work on his accuracy, as he bowls 2 long hops an over, generally. His sudden rise has also seen him grow a massive head apparently, too. Tari doesn’t have that much talent, but has the work ethic. Burl has the talent, but doesn’t work as hard as Tari.

Could it not just be a matter of experience? I also don't understand how these guys who are clearly more talented struggle against weak teams but the older guys with less talent always dominate the smaller teams. Experience is the only difference I see.

I maintain it’s often the coaching. If you have a talented player put him on the bowling machine facing a variety of deliveries, particularly ones he struggles with and work towards him not giving it away after 200 deliveries, create a net scenario where he mustn’t lose his wicket and score with different imaginary field settings so he has to find new scoring areas when the fielders are moved and see how long he goes before f*%ing it up. It won’t be long, we don’t do much of that. I’ve seen it done in a superficial way, but it should be most days if you’re a FC player. When it is done the players don’t take it seriously enough. Our players tend to use their limited net sessions to play shots as opposed to leaving well and creating match scenarios in their heads. If you only net three days a week and have a 20-30 minute slot you want to play shots, and so you should, but the other 4 hours a week should be spent being tight, and maybe an hour spent playing T20 shots. I’ve seen very few coaches break out a new ball with the sidearm and give an opener a work over and see how long he survives. The reality is that you can make up a bit for lack of game time with some one on one dedicated coaching. The problem usually is if the coach has to do that for 15 players in his squad he’ll drop dead of exhaustion.

Burl has what and Tari has what?
Burl looks like a grafter to me. I don't know if thats what you call talent.
Anyway Burl should be playing the shorter forn of cricket for the national teams, I said this a long time ago and some call me out for being a white basher.
Worse this was against a an evidently very weak attack. Inexcusable. Inescapable.

At least twice a week you have to create a net environment that’s tougher than what he’s going to experience in a game. It’s a huge undertaking to develop a good player and it takes time. The problem is there are people in other places doing it. We’re quarter doing it. I watched a Surrey 14 year old (Indian boy), have a one hour net with a private coach and two men throwing, the entire session recorded for analysis. I had a great conversation with the coach, the kid and his dad. He did it every single day that he wasn’t actually playing or practising with Surrey, winter and summer at £40 a session. I’m not lying to you that in that entire hour this youngster did not play one false shot, it was mesmerising.
How do you match that?
How do you match that?

That’s an interesting comment. There was much grumpiness and the usual race card thrown around that he used to focus primarily on BT, which was nonsense. What did make me laugh was when the guy’s time was up and he was wanting a bit more Gobs was so hostile with that sidearm that the batter would usually wear quite a few.
He’s a genius with that sidearm. Those batting coaches earn their money if they’re conscientious. I’m yet to see one that doesn’t have shoulder or elbow problems.

What little I’ve seen of Burl I like. He’s really good by most standards. Quite why he’s not making runs is the age old question that has tormented batsmen and coaches for decades. What he has to figure out is what’s best for him to get out of the slump, it’s a personal thing. The longer it carries on for the more mentally traumatic it is. I think it’s why front line batters lose hair and probably die prematurely.
