Tri series Zim, SA NZ
Re: Tri series Zim, SA NZ
Is there a rule about what size squad you're allowed? The standard seems to be about 15, but could you have 20?
Re: Tri series Zim, SA NZ
That Herald article is surprising. I am more used to them saying they would rather dig up the pitch than ZC cede an inch of territory to the Rhodesians.

16 after the new concussion rule.Even though For a bilateral T20 series, a cricket team can select a squad of any size they choose. Icc tournaments have limits.
Re: Tri series Zim, SA NZ
My point being this-
ZC claim that our selectors choose the squad and then the coach chooses the playing eleven.
This would be easy to test- they pick a squad of 25 or so and let the coach then have a bit more choice as to his final eleven. My bet is his team would look very different to a team we would end up with if the choice is only 15 players.

Raza has just done a question and answer and being gunned for it.
Re: Tri series Zim, SA NZ
Good

There’s a lot of discontent with his picking and choosing of games and collusion with the board in certain selections. Runs 3 years ago is no longer credit in the bank.
He desperately needs a good series. He was woeful against Ireland. Striking at like 80 in the one completed match

Good will for him is running out now in a large number of fans.
Presser was typical raz dawg, evasive and shady. Beating around the bush of why evans wasn’t selected. Then he claimed he doesn’t care about the socials and laughs at posts. Nah bro, his block list is longer than a telephone directory so he clearly does care

Re: Tri series Zim, SA NZ
I've just waded thru a whole bunch of selection arguments on X.
ZC keep going back to these leaderboards to justify selections. They don't do it all the time, but only when it suits.
Wes has better bowling stats than Raza, but who's our main spinner? Stats are often very misleading.
We dont play enough domestic franchise T20 to start getting a better idea of who's who. When is that going to happen?
We have a tiny pool here and the likelihood of having a specialist T20 player that isnt good at the other formats that can perform at the highest level are zero. The closest we've got to really attacking batters are probably Kamunhukamwe, Maru, Schadendorf, Bennett, Burl, Campbell, Raza, Williams, Naqvi, Kaitano, Maruma, Welch Jr, Chiorah, Musikiwa, Munyonga, Myers, Madande, Ikea....maybe have left out a couple.
You have the guys that are front line and then the middle order guys. Here's my 10c worth about a couple of them.
Bennett. He's done great. Not much to say. Long may it continue. He will have a poor run at some point. We're waiting with bated breath to see how he's managed. Will he get 50 internationals to come right?
Raza- our match winner. We've had to hope he saves the blushes or gets it done for us at the back end. He definitely is not as sharp against the big teams, but he's still a great player.
Musekiwa- our finisher. Hits a long ball and very talented. BUT he has struggled against tight bowling. He's a dot, dot, dot, dot, 4/6 guy. It completely negates his hitting prowess. Its not conjecture, we've seen it time and again. He needs to fix that...can he fix that? If only it were that easy. We've got a few guys like this.
Madande- ditto. Talented, fast hands, but he panics and his go to is that crazy swing over cow that doesn't come off too often. I've been consistent in my reservations about Clive. I think they've backed the wrong horse. We will know at some point, hopefully doesn't cost us too dearly, because he's in the loop forever.
Burl- good player, seems to have lost some form of late, but he can play at this level, we've seen it, but a lot of nothing in-between the good stuff. He owes us and himself.
Schadendorf- for whatever their poor reasons he's been sacked. Certainly our best striker in Zim, but all we've seen him in really is club cricket T20. Personally I dont think he had answers against sustained high pressure bowling. I've seen him struggle a couple of times when it's tight, but we will never know. How they've treated him is disgusting. He's absolutely good enough for franchise cricket and to see how he'd go from there, but he's been firmly blocked. End of career, but they'll persevere with their aged friends. These are nasty people.
TK- fantastic ball striker, but we've seen him, perhaps not enough of him, he also struggles against pressure bowling.
Maru- amazingly talented, has really bottled his international career. Is he front line or lower order? He's never backed himself against tight bowling and resorts to that help it round the corner shot when he gets tight, which hasn't worked for him internationally. Needs to back his other shots. He's got them all.
As with Madhevere they need to figure out a way of getting these guys into a better head space. Repeatedly subjecting them to the same pressures without solutions is not the answer. The reality is that sometimes there isn't a solution. Some guys just don't cope with pressure as well as others. In no other world would some of our perennial favorites ever had as much opportunity. I think Innocent Kaia is a good player, but his nerves are shot. Even if a guy can play with a reasonably clear head knowing this isnt his last shot the pressure of constant failures gets to you in a big way.
Madhevere- he doesnt usually hit it long so in theory can't finish so has to go up the order. He hasn't done well there for a long time. Theyve backed him for so long and he's sustained such a barrage of abuse and has had so many poor outings he has to be a basket case. The poster boy for mismanagement.
Myers- he's a good player. Struggles against good spin. Needs to dramatically improve his sweeping or leave the shot for now. Hasn't worked out for him so far...but he's going to always get opportunities. He's part of the group of young black batters thst theyre hanging their hats on. I have hope for Dion, he's got a good head on his shoulders, which is half the battle.
Welch Sr- has been discarded from T20 after his poor Namibia outing on shocking pitches when everyone else failed as well. Of all the un-established batters he's the one with most game at this level, particularly for T20. People can debate the bowlers and other batters, but he's the also an inexplicable ommission. He's the batter most likely to do damage up front. Rotates fairly well, hits it miles, has a game plan, capable of scoring off good deliveries. He's trying to make a career in his worst format
. Forget the stats, they dont tell the story. He's averaging 13 in T20 internationals. At the rate we play T20 its years for him to improve his stats.
Campbell J- he got limited opportunities, didn't take them and has been binned. Limited in the Vee, but he's a decent player. Dunno when we might see him again. Could he succeed at this level? Again we may never know.
Naqvi- we wait and see. The second every box is ticked he will play all formats. We need him to be able to play at this level desperately. They'll play destructive games with who replaces.
Munyonga- good player, never seems to be one of their Golden Boys. Should have had more opportunities by now. I think he's got game. He's definitely going to get more exposure going forward. I have hope.
Welch Jr. Definitely an alternative to our batter/keeper problem. Forget the stats. He's ridiculously talented. He needs a good next season and ideally do well in this emerging side going to UK. That will need to coincide with our existing options tanking, which is likely, because we've seen them already and none of them have done anything with any consistency. If they wont let him keep he's basically hamstrung, but he's got the game to make it as a batter as well. They're going to have to have a look at some point. They threw a few guys in the deep end when they definitely weren't ready and its backfired badly and messed up good players. By the time Melch's shot eventually comes they will have inadvertently managed him quite well.
Williams- won't play under Raza. Fantastic cricketer. We need him in T20. How have they possibly discarded him? It's ridiculous. Its just man management.
Ervine- their plan to "retire" Ervine and Williams is based on building a younger team going forward, but it could easily cost us a qualifying spot. T20 is not Craig's strongest suit. His MO is run a ball 20-30 then he plays shots and gets his run rate up to 130%. Obviously he'll bang a loose delivery if he gets one but he struggles to get his run rate going early on. In a low scoring game (most of ours are
), he provides an important anchor.
Evans- as pointed out Gwandu has better stats, but as I pointed out Wes has better bowling stats than Raza. If theyre going to keep up this stats nonsense then Wes should bowl before Raza for the next 2 years. At some point this delusional disengenuous way of "identifying" talent has to stop.
He's our best first change bowler, if not opener in T20. Take a look at his batting ability and ffs someone improve him because he can really bat. He needs to bat higher up in franchise. Its just window dressing anyway so he could also keep. Its a joke. Always two sets of rules.
We need some sharp guys to identify our best players for ea format from our miniscule talent pool. They back Salamander to pick the final eleven and try and get us to win internationals, but he's not good enough to identify the players that could do that? We need failed/mediocre cricketers that have those elite level skills to identify talent? It's a sad joke. Then we need a voice box who can't play cricket at all to justify it. At least people listen to someone like Raza, but his explanations don't really wash for most. He's singing from the ZC hymn sheet. Bear in mind he pushed for Faraz. This guy is in a position to push for some meaningful selections, but doesn't. Whether the team wins or not so long as he personally does well his T20 career is assured. I'm not suggesting this is where he's at, but it doesn't change the fact.
In my view here's the T20 team we have to shoot for.
Bennett
Welch
Naqvi
Williams
BT (kpr cpt)
Raza
Higgins (he will come...needs money!)
Evans
Masakadza (hes a good player)
Blessing
Richie
If we want to qualify and not disgrace ourselves on the world stage this is our team. Probably all formats actually

Say this alleged quota is real? Seems like it might reduce, the shorter the format.
Maxed out in tests and a couple of guys in t20, allegedly
what would be the reasoning behind that?
