New Zealand in Zimbabwe 2016
July 7, 2016

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is monitoring the unrest in Zimbabwe ahead of its team's tour to the country later this month. Widespread protests against economic and civil issues have taken place in Zimbabwe this week.

New Zealand's departure for Africa will not be delayed as of now, NZC public affairs manager Richard Boock told the New Zealand Herald, but the board will keep a close watch on the situation as the team prepares for the two Tests against Zimbabwe at a camp in Pretoria, South Africa.

"We are monitoring closely what is happening in Zimbabwe," Boock said. "There are no plans to delay the players leaving New Zealand. While in camp in Pretoria, we will be able to keep an eye on what is going on. South Africa A are in Harare at present, and we will be liaising with South Africa Cricket and the British High Commission in Harare."

Currently, South Africa A are in Zimbabwe to play two four-day games, one each in Harare and Bulawayo. In June, India had played three ODIs and three T20s in Harare without incident.

The New Zealand team is scheduled to fly to South Africa on July 11, before moving to Zimbabwe in time for a three-day warm-up game in Harare from July 22. The Tests are set to be played in Bulawayo between July 28 and August 10.

A nationwide strike to protest a lack of jobs and unpaid wages was organised in Zimbabwe on July 6, leaving city streets deserted. On Monday, taxi drivers clashed with security forces in Harare over issues of extortion, leading to many arrests. Several other strikes - reportedly featuring the likes of civil servants, doctors, teachers - have also taken place in the drought-hit country.

I cant see the issue.
A few poor black guys on the fringes have finally woken up and had enough.
NZ is not their target, nor are they bad people.

They just havent got a voice and are rising up as a last resort kinda way.

Any excuse to wiggle out of a tour that they probably don't want.

Partially true, but there's no denying that Zim is in the worst state it has ever been. Is it your opinion that they would be 100% safe if something kicked off whilst they were here? The one thing that the Zimbo's haven't resorted to is bombing like our friends in the sub continent. It's apparent that 90% of the population are enough, and it's equally apparent that the incumbents have no intention of going anywhere. Unless the government is lent a chunk of money real soon, the people are going to get more unsettled by the minute. I see them brokering another GNU or a military solution to preserve the zanu wealth. Interesting, frightening, uncertain times. There is absolutely no reason for a side to want to come here other than to improve their stats and do a bit of fishing.

Plus the mutterings about the Third Force has to be concerning. I saw that policewoman stating that people had flown from Australia to demonstrate with their friends in the Falls. I'm really not sure why a group that makes up 0.3% of the population would choose to raise their heads above the parapet yet again? If you want to stop a decent outcome give the government an opportunity to tell the population that there's whites behind all of this.

Well said Googly. What would it take for Zanu to give up power?

They are woven into the fabric of our society, I'm not sure that's possible. Party affiliation and job security and access to the gravy train is African politics and it's the undoing of the continent. There's never an independent judiciary, police or military to keep the politicians in check. A country is never really free until it's been liberated from the liberators and that usually requires a couple of generations. We have an almost unique situation in that we no longer have any actual cash to transact and it seems unlikely that the population will accept Bond notes/Zim currency. The problem is dire and requires an urgent solution. The pressure to find a lender is enormous and if they don't there are going to be some major upheavals over the next couple of months. Having a massively bloated civil service of zanu stalwarts to ensure votes has backfired badly now that they can't be paid. Only a quarter of them are necessary but there's no functional economy to release them into. There's a rocky road ahead.

Absolute bull isn't it.
Sick of these idiots. ZANU isn't the problem, they need to look inward and solve their own problem or end themselves.

Poor? Then get money?

Can't get money? Work harder and get a job.

Can't get a job? Think outside the box.

Twenty years ago I lost my job but instead of being another black bum, I used my head and figured these a massive industry exporting collectables that are native to Zimbabwe. China and Asia love valuables from elephants and wildlife and are prepared to pay well and I do a decent trade.

Only need to sell 24 a get and make three chine trips and that's all I need to live comfortably and pay povvos to cook and clean for me :)
