Makoni remains by far the most powerful cricekt figure in Zimbabwe, yet some people will continue to point to that ICC Pakistani appointment. Years from now they will deny Makoni was responsible for any positive development too, but maybe point to him if it's negative. Such are the contradictions in Zimbabwe.
I asked a question why is Makoni still part of the powers that be in ZC if it was truly liberated, but no one had an answer.
So again it's a case of tradde-offs.
That ICC guy only has control over the national team. Period!
And what has he done?
1. Spent money touring Europe in preparation for a tour to the sub continent![]()
2. Spent time, money and efforts towards hosting a qualifying tournament in Africa, for a tournament proper to be played in England's conditions instead. (If Zimbabwe do qualify, England will look to pay Zimbabwe off participating, and Zimbabwe will take the money. Had IRE and SCO hosted the qualifier, and Zimbabwe qualified, morally, ECB would struggle to argue otherwise, and Zimbabwe will participate.)
3. He is looking to spend money on long-term contracts for players who WILL DEFINITELY NOT live up to what is expected.
4. Burnt bridges with India (BCCI). Expected, since he's a Pakistani; however,
5. ...tours hosting SL and WI last year (Test and Tri-Series), plus touring SL this year, cost ZC quite a lot. WI later this year will cost quite a bit too. More cricket is good, but it's at a cost. Not even the "bribe or surplus" from ICC can cover this.
Things are building up nicely. It will hit the fan hard![]()
