No, he got into various age group teams and actually captained a sort of Rest of the World side in the Under-19 World Cup before Zimbabwe achieved Test status. He also played just a few matches for Zimbabwe in first-class and one-day cricket before going to Warwickshire - I don't remember the details of that. Yes, one of the best, and still is.
