Former Zimbabwe cricketers Elton Chigumbura and Kyle Jarvis have been appointed as talent scouts as Zimbabwe Cricket under another former captain Hamilton Masakadza look to cast their net far and wide in the country to unearth the next generation of players.

As per the board's media release, the pair will be responsible for identifying players from around the country and mentoring them from the grassroots level all the way up the development pathway.

"We are excited to have Elton and Kyle, who both excelled as players at the highest level of the international game, joining us as national talent scouts," Masakadza, ZC's Director of Cricket said. "They will play a very important role as we move to establish a fully structured scouting network that is designed to identify, track and develop talented players from the youth level who will be nurtured through our development system."

Chigumbura, a former national team skipper, called time on his 284-game international career after the tour of Pakistan last year. Fast bowler Jarvis retired in June this year at the age of 32 following a spate of injury and illness concerns.

Definitely a step on the right direction. Rather than whining and yearning for players who opted to pursue playing for England like most posters on this forum do, the solution lies in unearthing fresh talent that can be molded into the next Muzarabani's of the world. Credit where its due, this is proactive. Hopefully, in a few years time we will see real emerging Zim XI teams full of "unfamiliar names" and less of the perennial failures that humiliated Zim cricket in Namibia

I like this for two reasons. Both of these guys have had different journeys and can relate to different styles.

Elton will be able to hopefully create that connection with the townships and being able to tap into areas where talent will go missed due to lack of opportunity,

What I'd like to know is how this set up will look. Are these guys merely just going to watch schools and identify a player who might have talent. Invite them to camps at HSC and whoever does well may get a shot at the Zim U19's,

or

Is it going to be a proper youth setup where players get identified. Go into a training programme where they train regularly as part of the setup and start to work their way through into metropolitan teams and franchise domestic sides as a pathway to national team selection.

Good move by ZC. The best thing is that they've identified two very capable people, Elton Chigumbura and Kyle Jarvis. They can be trusted to do a good job.

It seems good on the surface.
Talent scouts are a good thing, and that’s a role that suits these guys.

But I also think;
A- is this a good use of a restrained budget? When players don’t get paid?
And,
B- How hard is it to identify talent in Zim really?
Just got to look at scorecards in the school competition.
With batting- not one of those sports you can identify randoms. Batting is a result of coaching.
Bowling is a little different as it’s largely genetics.
So I am guessing the mission for these guys would be to identify kids who have the ability to bowl 140+.
It’s a bit difficult because you’d need them to bowl for a start to observe, and know enough about how to do it so you can look at them properly.

Harsh on Namibia and the players. Just today, Namibia bowled out Titans for 43 and Titans acc have quite a few international cricketers and emerging SA players.

It’s not taht we lost, it’s how we lost. Annhilation. We had players who were meant to stop humiliation. That’s what Chamu etc should have done.
