Whatmore & Hathurasingha is among the best when it comes to lifting a weak side, as their coaching careers reveals such numbers.
Whatmore is very overrated. Achived very little with Bangladesh over a very long period. Siddons was a far better coach.

Siddons would be the perfect coach for Zimbabwe IMO. Especiallyl with the Young 4 coming into prominence.

A bit harsh on Whatmore though. Remember when he took over Bangladesh were ranked 11th well behind Kenya even. Whatmore took that team from 11th to 9th or very close to 9th, as well as the 2nd round of the 2007 World Cup.

Siddons was more influential, and Hathurasinghe had results in his favor, but I'm not of the belief that he did something others would have been unable to do, besides being a divisive character.

Whatmore made Sri Lanka world champion in 1996, team which won just two matches in 1992 world cup. Whatmore made Bangladesh reach in Knockout of 2007 World Cup, a team which won nothing in 2003 world cup. In all these cases he worked for 4 years, whereas Zimbabwe gave him less then 2 years to work didn't gave him the space to work, reason may be he relies more on performers irrespective of age, colour then proven failures also plays a role in selection of players.

Some of his great moves were made Jayasuriya & Kalu explosive openers in that 1996 world cup, surprisingly brought under 19 Musfiqur, Shakib & Tamim by dropping underperform seniors in that 2007 World Cup, in the end they became overnight stars of Bangladesh

Honestly, I'm going to have to agree here. We've had quality coaches come and go and we've not really moved forward.

At some point, the finger has to be pointed at the board. It's not always the coaches fault.

Hathurasingha has also record of lifting teams. He lifted New South Wales when they were in trouble, helped in restructuring Sydney Sixers. Working with Australia's best domestic set up when they were having best time gave him an experience in shaping Bangladesh Cricket. Yes, the seeds which were planted by Whatmore grown into fruits at the time of Hathurasingha. He got into controversy with senior players, however leader like Mortaza made it simple, similary Whatmore also had issue with Ranatunga. Hathurasingha didnt got space from SL cricket similarly Whatmore didnt get enough time from ZC, but since these two have got results in lifting weak team, they are still popular and are in the mix of becoming coach of any national team.

I’ve said it before but Zimbabwe has had some really good coaches, Whatmore & Streak were very good coaches. Especially Whatmore, it was ridiculous to sack him when they did just because he lost two series to Afghanistan.

Whatmore did a great job imo, despite being given an unbalanced side for the 2015 WC, the team performed very well considering they won just the one match. He then lost his best batsman & bowler in BT & Chatara.

Despite that the team performed very well in Pakistan before beating India, NZ, Pakistan & Ireland (series win) at home. By the time the Afghanistan series (home & away) came around the team had played so much cricket and were crippled by injuries and lost both series 3-2.

I felt under his guidance we saw the likes of Ervine, Raza, Williams, Chigumbura & even Hamilton & Chamu become proper international batsman, this is proven by the amount of 100s they scored during that time compared to the rest of their careers.

Whatmore should never have been sacked, in a perfect world he could have moved into a Head of cricket position at ZC and revamped the pathway & junior systems. But in Zimbabwe it’s not a perfect world.

At this point, anyone who has played (and excelled at ) cricket at the highest level will do. Bloody hell, if ZIFA , the cesspool of corruption and incompetence will fire a coach with 70% losing record , why can't ZC sack Rajput and his useless coaching staff?. This coaching set up has a +90% losing record what do they need to do to get fired?
