1st ODI Zimbabwe vs Ireland

Post by lobsang »

Three very important games for Zimbabwe against the Irish, Marumani has been a huge disappointment on this tour so far, I hoped that he would at least chip in with one notable contribution but he failed to do so on four occasions. Williams looked like he is in a very good touch the other day against Ireland Wolves so hopefully he will play a vital part. It was absolutely ludicrous to rest those seniors for all 5 T20s, they could have played Taylor for 3 matches to just give him the feel of the conditions but they chose against it for God knows.. In other quality international teams, you naturally expect the best XI to be out there on the park to play for their countries but Zimbabwe is an exception, they will absolutely do the very opposite of it so we never know who is playing tomorrow even though, being an avid fan of Zimbabwe cricket, we could not even guess 9 players who will, in all probability, play tomorrow. Hopefully the XI I am going to put below will tomorrow.

Madhevere
Taylor
Chakabva
Ervine
Williams
Myers
Raza
Burl
Wellington
Muzarabani
Ngarava ( or Jongwe or Chatara )

Burl is injured.

Wes will bat down the order in ODIs. Chakabva will open. Either Taylor or Myers/Shumba will open too.

1 Taylor
2 Chakabva
3 Myers/Shumba
4 Ervine
5 Williams
6 Madhevere
7 Raza
8 Jongwe
9 Masakadza
10 Muzarabani
11 Ngarava

I would be happy to see shumba open with Chakhabva and then Taylor at 3.
Shumba has just about edged myers in the 20 20 matches. That's not saying a hell of a lot but out of the two young players has to be shumba and madhevere in tomorrow. Having 3 lefties will also disrupt the rhythm of the Irish bowlers at times.
If shumba keeps his head the ODI might just be his most profitable format. I feel he needs to play himself in before going for shots. Same as ervine which is why you don't want ervine following him at 3 but someone like Taylor

Shumba, Burl and Ervine all need time at the crease, they are not natural stroke players. Taylor can hit balls out of the from the word go, Williams can milk singles from the word go but players like Ervine, Burl and Shumba need time to settle in.

Desperately need at least 2 wins out of this series otherwise they can forget about automatic qualification and start worrying about relegation.

At least get the big 4 to play in the same xi please. Everyone has Williams in their side but how confident that he will be selected?

I know a lot of guys here are obsessed with the big 4 Taylor, Wiliams, Raza, Ervine. I dont think, they can win us games , they have played the majority of their cricket together and our win ratio has continued to be very poor. The big 4 even failed to get us qualification in the last world cup.

Just by looking at the mix, i think the BIG 4 have under performed significantly, considering they have never been in form all at once. The big 4 do not seem to take responsibility as senior players to either bat responsibly or finish the game. We have lost a lot of close games and also lost games we should have won when the big 4 all played together.

I think the problem is each and every one of the big 4 players lack the required collective or individual performance to get us across the line.

I will continue to hold my breath and see if the BIg 4 eventually click at once and show us what we have be wishing for all these years especially in the last 5 years.

Looking at the stats the Big 4 should be winning us more games, our Middle order us the strongest it has been in years, but still they only click once in a blue moon.
If the Big 4 presence in the middle order was something to go by we should have been at least a better ranked side in the One day rankings.

Exactly what baffles me is that ZC want the flow of cash from ICC to continue so if they are honestly clever then they should make players like Williams and BT happy so that they will stick around and play key parts in the revival of the old glory and a more competent and fair management will also give a sense of assurance to those young players who aspire to represent the country in the near future. ZC must be aware that the worst could come their way if the team finishes at the bottom of the super league table. Remember in the old days, early 2000s to be precise, Zimbabwe would tour to India quite regularly and I still remember the VB triangle series involving India, Zimbabwe and Australia. I bet India and teams like Australia would play Zimbabwe more often than not if the team is as strong as it used to be in the late 90s and early 2000s and it is always lucrative when you host teams like India and Australia. I do believe that the talent is abundant in the country but the management is so corrupted that players with promising future would not dare risking their careers by sticking around in the country.

We had a pretty pop gun bowling attack for a few years too remember. Payangara though metronomical wasn't great in ODI and we had blessing muzarabani cousin taurai who was medium pace at best, not to mention the non spinning kamungozi Easy to blame batting for not getting us across line. Brendon Taylor has scored plenty of centuries in losing causes.
