Zimbabwe UCB records

Post by cricket_22001 »

The following is a list of best performers for the Zimbabwe Board XI that competed in South Africa's 2nd tier first class competition between 1993/4 to 1995/6 inclusive. This Board XI competed between 1996/7- 2001/2 as well but SA downgraded its status for the competition not to be first class(for whatever reason) & scorecards for this period are difficult to obtain.
Regardless, it was a season long 'A' tour that gave exposure to a host of players on the fringe of national exposure or those breaking through in the post Traicos, Pycroft & soon to be Houghton era.
I point out the Logan Cup between 93/4-95/6 was played between 4 teams on a single round robin basis with a final between the top 2 teams.
The Logan Cup in 1996/7 was a 3 match series played between Mashonaland & Matebeleland.
In 1997/8 & 1998/9 it was a 3 team, single round competition. Yep, total of 2 games per team.
In these stats, the figure in brackets represents the number of Logan Cup games the player was involved in during this 1993/4-1995/6 period.

The stats below are the Zimbabwe Cricket Board XI UCB season figures for 1999/00. A total of 6 matches were played. They are non FC status. There are other random scorecards available. For example, in 01/02, Alistair Campbell hit a century in each innings against Gauteng B while Dirk Viljoen scored an unbeaten 122 & 43 against North West B. In 1998/99, Viljoen made some sort of major contribution in all 5 of the matches played. (I wrote these contributions down but can't find the source. it's not cricinfo or cricketarchive). South Africa had a 2nd tier competition for years with FC status so why this was not given is surprising. I'm sure many of the players would have wanted them in their career stats.
The Logan Cup was a very short competition, so the UCB comp was a fine compliment to the season. Actually, 1999/00 was the season the LC expanded to 5 teams & was on single round robin competition played in March 2000. So, Ray Price played 4 LC matches, 6 UCB matches & went on the Zimbabwe A tour of Sri Lanka for another 5 FC matches. At the start of the season he played tour games against Australian sides & made his test debut against the touring Sri Lankans in December 1999. This debut would have been in the middle of the uCB season.
In my humble opinion, it is this type of exposure that contributed greatly to Price's development. And something that is missing for todays spinners such as Mavuta & Masakadza. Until the recent emerging players tour of Namibia, I believe it is 2015/2016 when the last A type tour took place. To India against Afghan A.

Definitely could do with figuring out a better way to display these so they are more readable. Modern forum software would help! Maybe you could upload spreadsheets or screenshots of them?

But they are fantastic! Kudos to you for all this work. I was just looking through some of your old posts from years ago as well - some great stuff in there. It’s Much appreciated!
