Is Dion Myers gone for the next 4 years?

Post by Kriterion_BD »

Going to Uni...does that mean he won't play AT ALL for Zimbabwe in the next 4 years?

A terrible pity as I really thought he had the goods. Someone ought to tell him that if he works hard, he could even get an IPL deal.

It's a real shame. His main issue will be the level of cricket he plays for now and how ZC treat him. It also depends on how much cricket we play between May and September. Our domestic season is basically done then. It's all up to him at this stage. That 2 year post study work permit might mean he can beat the system if he really wants to stay and play that side too.

I don't know why he did this. He was touted as the next captain, he was a part of the playing XI across all formats, he was doing well. Zimbabwe are getting good amount of fixtures as well.

We can keep blaming ZC all our lives but if the players keep walking away then there is only so much a board can do.

I personally think given the context of the Zim economy it was a wise decision. Always good to have a fall back plan after cricket especially in Zim. He is 19, if he returns at 22 he still has potentially 15 years of cricket. Retire, do some quick post grad then start a late career in something else in hopefully an improved Zimbabwe as a country. Key is for ZC to keep contact with him, encourage him to stay fit and play some sort of cricket in the next 3 or 4 years, then come back and play for Zim. Good on him I'd say, and good on everyone if he does come back to play.

He's deadset blown his cricketing career. You don't come back to elite level from 4 years out of the game.

Stupid beccause he couldve done it part time online.

that said, wasnt that always his plan? I remember hearing bout this a while ago from googly or someone.

You do realise 90% of athletes study/make arrangements for post sport life WHILE they are playing right?

Hamilton did a similar sort of thing, and probably that played a part in motivating his current position. If Myers is as talented as we know he is, why would he fail to reestablish himself in 3 or 4 years at age 22/23? Unless he loses interest in the game. Again, given the situation in Zim, A degree in England is definitely worth it, and doing it online is definitely not as good in the eyes of employers. Bottom line, ZC is an unstable employer, and this makes the option he has taken more lucrative.

A good question would be how much he made in the short spell he was involved with ZC. Salary, match fees etc. People make it sound like is no money when you are playing for the national team. It would be interesting to know what they are currently paying. Not too sure about the recent structure.

I think his parents played a heavy role here. Murray showed us what will probably happen. If there is no red carpet he might never come back. If he does the likes of Wes will be at least a hundred games into their international careers. He will never catch up. I don't care what anybody says those schools or domestic systems can never replicate facing Shaheen Shah Afridi or Rashid Khan in the flesh. Its a different kind of pressure.

A statement from myers or the mysterious Zimbabwe cricket communications department might be helpful 😂😂.
Might be helpful for clarity

I think it will be selfish for us as fans to to not let this kid study and come back and still be only 23. We may even discover another proper batter in this time and his return just adds to resources. You are right, the parents most likely played a big role in this decision. At the end of the day, there is a lot of uncertainty in professional sport, and in Zimbabwe if you lose your place or central contract, it is a big financial disaster. We can argue that him coming from a rich family would provide a cushion but still, you need back up in that country. I bet if the other young lads had the opportunity and means to study in England, they would have followed the same route. It's sad he has to go, but this is not a major blow to us.
