I few months ago former Australian Coach John Buchanan said that cricket should become a franchise were countries could buy players from one another. He said this would even out the teams. I was just wonderin what your oppinions would be and how Zimbabwe would go if this was the case.

That would kill it as an "international" sport, and would also disadvantage countries like Zimbabwe who wouldn't be able to afford to buy any of the big names - it would just become a circus between the wealthy sides (Australia, England, India, and maybe Paksitan) with the other teams sidelined. A very bad idea.

Would it be "Zimbabwe" playing if ZC somehow managed to contract 7-8 foreigners to play for the side? I don't think so, and I wouldn't be such a keen follower of the team if that was the case. National sides also act as a target for players in a country to aim for - if spots in the national team are being taken by people from overseas, there's less of an incentive (similar problem that some people think is ruining the English football squad - too many foreign players in the Premier League means less opportunity to develop English players).

With the creation of the Indian Cricket League, Indian Premier League, etc, cricket is already becoming too commercialised. By creating international franchises, it totally defeats the purpose of supporting your country.

For instance, in the Indian Cricket League... does anyone here actually care who wins? Does anyone in India even care who wins? The teams may be called Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai, etc... but next to none of the players in those teams actually come from that region!

In response to your question, how would Zimbabwe go: if it were to ever happen (and I for one can't see it happening), we would probably see the end of Zimbabwe cricket. The way it would work, is Australian youngsters would be positioned all throughout the world, with the occasional English/South African/Indian player here and there.

Nobody would choose to go to Zimbabwe to play cricket (cricket standards + politics + standard of living). Nor would anyone go to Bangladesh (cricket standards + standard of living), and maybe the West Indies (declining cricket standard + better living conditions in Australia, England, NZ, etc).

What a stupid idea by Buchanan, was he drunk at the time? The idea would effectively kill cricket in three countries. Keep the franchise system to domestic competitions.

Good point, i raised eyebrows on the ICL, its turning out to be a "World Super League". I reckon it could shift attention from the BCCI supported league and actually get more support.

ICL is very poorly covered. The weakest sports channel-Zee sports is televising it. There are on coverage in the national dailies or news channel. I dont think it has any future. more than it i enjoyed Hong Kong sixes where Streaky was in finals.

Yeah, ICL will die due to poor marketing. Too commercial. IPL will have more success due to the bargaining power of BCCI, but I think that will be short lived too.

Nope, only Zee sports covering it which is the least favoured channel of all.
Even though i'm in India m really not sure which are the 2 teams to meet in final today.
Its not at all interesting

Even Cricinfo are hardly covering it. To put it in perspective, I think the Pura Cup competition is getting just as much, if not more coverage.

Yes indeed, Streaky was in sublime touch with both bat and ball in Hong Kong Sixes. I just loved his ferocious six hitting form...

By the way, I don't know why neither ICL nor IPL tried getting some of the Zimbabwean stars of past and present. Would have been really nice to see them in action.
