U19 Trials

There's some U19 trials happening this weekend at Prince Edward. (Or, rather, kids that will be eligible for the 2024 U19 WC - so U17 effectively).

It's anybodies guess how they select these squads. It's incredibly ambitious/stupid thinking that there are circa 100 kids U19 that are anywhere near good enough for this level. I have to question whether some of the lesser known boys have ever played more than 1 or 2 cricket matches in their lives..

Anyway, of those selected; Saxon Pettican, Ben Williams, Sean Bennett, Connor Grant, Panashe Taruvinga, Newman Nyamhuri, Dylan Nzvenga and Mashford Shungu are the names I've been told to look out for!

And now, since the updated squads: add Liam Mudenda, Brandon Sunguro, Luke Van Zyl, Matt Schonken and Josh Martell to that list

I've heard Harry Streak is a bit special. Is he not around?

We can bad mouth this situation all we want but ultimately, we're seeing some proactivity at least from ZC. Ben Williams is a prospect I believe.

How do you possibly pick a squad of 17 boys representing Mutare, where there is 1, at most 2, schools that even have cricket in existence at a basic level there? Is it just a show of hands, 'who wants to play this thing called cricket this weekend? If you're lucky we'll give you some sadza and a free t shirt'.
There is something suspiciously racial here.
Notice how in the list al the whites and all the blacks are grouped together?
Whoever has compiled that list had race on the brain. Otherwise why else would it be like that?

He’s played school cricket and that Bulawayo junior competition recently. But with mixed performances. He’s probably persona non-grata unfortunately, and the Bulawayo squad looks like the most competitive to get into.

Taruvinga and Nyamhuri are the boys on the same scholarships at the same SA school that Wes & Madande went to. Sunguro is the same but seems unavailable.

Is Nzvenga the kid who scored like 180 not out or something monstrous in an SA cricket week a couple of years ago? I can’t find anything on it now but I’m sure it was him.

Shungu has played NPL and I believe even trained with Mountaineers this year so must be very good for a 16/17 year old.

Looks like the squads have largely changed since the lists that were sent out on the parents whatsapp earlier in the week. :D Typical ZC!

Some of the names I was complaining had missed out, now seem to be involved, which is good to see. Including Sunguro, Van Zyl and Mudenda - the latter in particular is Myers/Madhevere level or better.

I'll keep the first post updated with accurate squads. Good for archive purposes!
