Zimbabwean Wicket Keepers

Post by CalZim »

I thought I’d put in a tier system of where I think the current crop of wicket keepers stand in terms of quality (relative to Zim). This is based on batting and keeping combined. Hopefully it will spark some decent discussions.

I will update this based on others thoughts as well, please feel free to disagree with me. There are more keepers out there which can be included from the NPL just didn’t want to create a massive list. Tier E is basically rarely keep, only played NPL, not good enough or too young to know.

Tier A
NA

Tier B
Clive Madande (Tuskers) - FC 37, LA 28

Tier C
Tafadzwa Tsiga (Rocks)- FC 26, LA 25
Nyasha Mayavo (Rhinos) - FC 25, LA 20
Richmond Mutumbami (Rocks) - FC 35, LA 24
Joylord Gumbie (Mountaineers) - FC 26, LA 24
Spencer Magodo (Mountaineers) - FC 28, LA 38

Tier D
Shoun Handrisi
Kudzai Sauramba
Alvin Chiradza
Bright Matsiwe
Cunningham Ncube (Eagles)

Tier E
Tadiwanashe Marumani
Steven Saul - (ex Zim u19)
Tinashe Nehnunzi
Tafara Mupariwa
Kevin Kasuza
Larvet Masunda (Eagles)
Lennox Chando (NPL Gladiators)
Tafadzwa Ngulube (NPL Westside)
Nelson Chimbirimbi (NPL Scorpions)
Jameson Chikowero (NPL Mbizo)
Gilford Muzeya (NPL Uprising)
Dalubuhle Mboyi (NPL Queens 1)

Will add Spencer Magodo to here, don’t know much about him as he is very early in his career, nice average so far though

Will stick him in D tier for now.

Madande is going to have to step up quickly because those averages are really poor for the rest of the guys. The positive way to look at it is that Regis will probably stick around for a few more years as he has actually only recently secured a regular spot. It's been about 2 years only. I'm sure he has a lot prove

Can't disagree with any of that Cal.

In terms of just glovework, I'd rank them as;

1. Handirisi
2. Mayavo / Chakabva
4. Mutumbami
5. Moor/Madande/Tsiga
8. Marumani / Gumbie

Over the last 2-3 years Chakabva has improved , Moor and Mutumbami have declined.

Updated this with what’s happened so far in the domestic season (and so the thread doesn’t get lost).

Been very impressed with Cunningham Ncube’ glovework, so I have moved him up a rank to D (it’s a shame he can’t bat). If the Eagles seriously want Marumani to keep them maybe he can learn a lot from him. Personally I’d rather just watch Ncube with his excellent footwork, awareness and leg side catches.

How do you rate Tsiga overall with the bat and gloves? Does he have an outside chance?

Gumbie has played over 50 FC games at 26. That's impressive for our system

At the moment I would say Mutmumbami is slightly ahead of Madande. He is outperforming him with the bat in all formats this season. They will probably just be replacing each other until 1 clearly dominates although I think Mutumbami will get the nod for now. Its easy to put Madande as a backup but I don't think he is ready to take over full time just yet.
