Dave Houghton joins Southern Rocks

The new season of 2012/13 will see three of the five franchise teams with new coaches. The Logan Cup winners Matabeleland Tuskers will have Zimbabwe’s former great all-rounder Heath Streak as coach, replacing Dave Houghton, who is to move to Southern Rocks in a bid to revive the struggling Masvingo-based team which has yet to win a Logan Cup match after three seasons. Houghton replaces Monte Lynch, who is not returning to them this season.

The third change is at Mid-West Rhinos, where Grant Flower takes over as coach from the Australian Jason Gillespie, who has taken up the post of coach with Yorkshire. Kevin Curran remains coach of Mashonaland Eagles and Gary Brent of Mountaineers, from Mutare.

All five franchises continue under the same CEOs as last season. They are Vimbai Mapukute (Mashonaland Eagles), Stanley Stadden (Matabeleland Tuskers), Kenyon Ziehl (MidWest Rhinos), John Brent (Mountaineers) and Givemore Makoni (Southern Rocks).

The national selection panel will also be convened by Givemore Makoni, the other members being Wayne James of Bulawayo and Kevin Curran.

Squad details for the various franchise teams are not yet available, as the sorting out of contracts will not be completed until early September. The domestic season is expected to start in early October this year, after the World Twenty20 tournament.

Local cricketers have to brace themselves for a hectic 2012/13 season, which is set to be the most intense season, on the calendar of the domestic game.
The new season will include more matches and playing days per week as a result of weekly Twenty20 fixtures that will now form part of the core of the calendar.
Zimbabwe Cricket will announce the full fixtures in a few weeks but hinted that the local calendar starts in early October.
Zimbabwe’s domestic cricket mainly fea­tures three tournaments and five franchises take part in all formats –the first-class com­pletion the Castle Logan Cup, The Coca-cola Pro 50 (one-day tournament) and the Stan­bic Bank 20 series.
But, now, there will be a weekly Twenty20 competition.
“This year, in addition to the Stanbic 20 series, there will be a T20 running with the one dayers,” said ZC’s head of media and communication, Shingai Rhuhwaya.
