Test Batting Options - Stats

Post by secretzimbo »

With Raza seemingly unofficially retired from Tests and Ervine/Williams coming towards the final parts of their careers, and a gaping hole in the opening slot - I thought I'd put our current batting stats here.

Below shows the career First Class records of all current active players who have played Logan Cup or for Zimbabwe this season. All bat in the top 6 (plus WK's). Overseas/non-eligible players not included. Players with less than 10 appearances highlighted in italics.

Ideally if they average less than 30 they shouldn't even be in the conversation, but we are quite desperate.

Agree that anything less than an average of 30 does not warrant selection

Nice break down there SZ, and yes you’d hope we could be looking to select guys with averages above 30 or ideally 35-40. And yes I’m the middle order there are options for guys averaging above 30-35, but opening options are all below 30 except for Kaia.

Guys like BT, Hamilton, Ervine, Williams, Raza etc always averaged well above 40 in Logan Cup, but the next generation just aren’t dominating the local bowlers like they should be.

But The Little 3 are still young and I think in time they will end up averaging over 40 in Logan Cup. They’re still going they have time and lots of upside.

Hopefully they can lift their games before we see the exit of the Big 3 and hopefully Ballance hangs around a bit longer than his two year deal to help the transition period.

This really does highlight a major problem that will take time to fix, i know this has been done to death but from the players listed below if you could get 3 of them eligible to play for Zimbabwe straight away who would you choose ?

Eddie Byrom
Nick Welch
Dustin Melton
Dane Schadendorf
Tawanda Muyeye
Hilton Cartwright
Ryan Murray
Ben Curran
Ryan Higgins
Malcolm Lake

My 3 would be Cartwright, Higgins and Byrom

I wouldn’t take Cartwright if I was limited to 3, only because of his age, although I would love him.
Haven’t seen Higgins myself, but I’ll put an eye to youth and say Byrom/Dane and either Muyeye or Welch.
Melton is close as he is a bowler, just isn’t quite there.

There is absolutely no reason why we can’t entice at least three of those names though either.

Apologies. That was rude of me to play into it. Was in a rush and opened to the last msg.

What I can see from your stats is just how crazy it was to pick Tsiga over Madande.
The superior keeper and bat.

Well, when people see those numbers, no wonder they would like to look outside the box. People want excitement. You can't stop them from dreaming unrealistic stuff :)

Excluding Raza, Williams, Ervine, there are only 10 bats batting above 30.

Most of those have already tried and failed at test level so it's not a bright future ahead. I'm sure the young guys will come good at some point, they have to for us to be able to compete.

Ballance 47.74
Madande 37.09
Burl 35.02
Mutumbami 34.84
Madhevere 34
Shumba 32.91
Maruma 32.22
Kaia 30.65
Munyonga 30.28
Curran 30.28

First time coming across that guy's name since he scored 98* as a primary school batsman in a Stanbic Bank T20 curtain raiser in 2011. Anyway, I find it remarkable that Ballance has a superior FC average to our top batsmen who'd been facing weaker bowlers.
