Those that are singing praises of Houghton. The only ‘international experience’ Houghton had in his coaching career was player/coach from 1997 to 1999 WC. And that was it when he was appointed head coach again in he was a ‘novice’ to international cricket. Here ZC has appointed someone with 3 years recent coaching experience at International Level for a top side and we are whinging.

That’s why I don’t argue with some of you your cricket reasoning is too low. If I am too ask what made Dave so special? No one will give a proper solid answer. Leave Sammons to do his job and judge him with results. Anyways like I’ve always said current team is hopeless except 3 or 4 players only. He has a huge task and must make tough decisions to build a new team from scratch with just 3 or 4 current players.

Just to be devils advocate, even though I have never heard of this guy before, maybe he impressed at the interviews with his hunger and vision?

The ZC approach over the last 20 years has been veteran coaches at the back of their peak:
Marsh, Butcher, Houghton, Streak, Whatmore.
We only saw glimpses of brilliance in the Streak and houghton era, but both failed at the key moment.

This is why we thought domingo was going to be the coach. Same sorta shit.

This was peppered with the 'homegrown hero' phase of Waller for a year where not much cricket was played and Mangongo in the mid 20 teens, which was probably motivated by budget more than anyything. Waller came and went without a whimper and mangono didnt last 6 months after single handedly chasing out Taylor and grabbinga players nuts, showing no professionalism at all. That didnt work.

There is also Rajput but that was a political appointment.

What we havent really tried, since Simmons anyway (I dont think we can count this due to it being the beginning of the rebel era) is an up and coming coach wanting to make a mark on things.
He was also the batting coach to a successful batting team in SA, so worth keeping an open mind at least?

PS. I told you guys it'll end up being a saffer, its easy to convince a saffer to leave SA next door.
Zimbabwe a better country than SA if you have money.

Last point debatable - Zim better for the middle classes and reasonably wealthy, like cricketers and their coaches. SA still more pleasant for those with seriously huge money.

I hope you are right about this Salmon guy. But even if he was the world’s best coach and an absolute genius he is fighting a losing battle. He’s only just got the job and his first assignment is India, in our worst format, in less than three weeks. Brutal.
Doesn’t help that the board in all their wisdom have decided the best prep for a T20 series was a couple of 4-day intrasquad games and the 45-over club-level NPL.

He’s got a bloody hard job.

I think secret is being too harsh. We need to accept we are not the level of side we one were. Can only live on nostalgia with other countries for so much. Coaches don't want to be at a test side that can't qualify for big tournaments. We were never going to sign a massive name because if that was the case, we would have announced them way earlier. You don't take your time on a big name.

Sammons seems to have some sort of pedigree and is not a complete nobody.

jonty obviously knows things and the way he is talking doesn't fill me with hope, only because it sounds in the same tone as the like of zolsky. Building this up to be a bigger appointment than it actually is.

In saying that, he deserves a chance to at least prove himself. This guy needs full control to appoint his coaching team and be able to make big calls when needed. If he wants to drop a Wes, he should be allowed to do so without the race card coming out and TM attacking him.

We always have talent, but we are never able to nurture it. The amount of top talent we have lost out on over the years in ridiculous.

Perhaps zimbabwe has some talent but have they ever had a purely talented player like archer, rabada, mitchell Johnson, Mitchell stars, shaheen afridi , Chris gayle who are athletically far ahead.

Perhaps Sean Williams is the most naturally talented zimbabwe has.

We have an ongoing issue where the black batsman regress with age.

i really want to get to the bottom of this phenomenom.

Is it because they are highlighted and treated like gold and with a red carpet through the system on account of them being black?

Wes is going backward, Musakanda has done nothing since he hit that hundred against SL in 2017. Hamilton didn't get better than when he was a teenage prodigy.
List goes on.

I can only think of maybe Roy Kaia who has bucked that trend, even so nothing huge. It was also documented how driven he was to get better and maybe that is a clue.

Compare this to Raza, who ten years ago was a bit part cricketer then who was in and out of the team. Ervine spent years in and out of the main side and only really hit his straps around 30. Willo improved.
Campbell is clicking into gear very nicely.

I think if we can figure what is causing this out, we might unlock our potential.

I’m not building this up to look like a bigger appointment. Give the guy a chance to prove his worth. That being said, it’s a huge task for him with the resources currently available. To be honest he has little to work with in terms of playing personnel. He only has about 4 quality players the rest aren’t good enough.

Hopefully DH will out introduce solid player pathways and development structures. This will take about 5 to 6 years it’s a long and painful project but then with Makoni at the helm I’m not having high hopes. This projects needs funding and with the likes of Makoni being head of Marketing you think he can structure meaningful sponsorship deals for ZC?

ZC is a complete Joke.

The only real prospect of success for a Zimbabwean coach is the occasional victory over a full member and perhaps qualifying for an ICC tournament now and then. Maybe we can push for a 24 team T20 World Cup to give us a better chance of qualification. As jonty said, we have about 4 good players and the rest are just not good enough, even against other Associates.

what was DH's role in the end? I remember seeing he was sticking around, but not specifically where he would fit.
