CRICKET rebels Trevor Gripper and Barney Rogers are back in the fold and have a real chance of playing for Zimbabwe again.
They were part of the group of 15 players who walked out of the Zimbabwe team five years ago.
But with Zimbabwe making serious efforts to return to Test cricket the signs are positive for the rebels.
So far Cricket Zimbabwe has introduced four franchises — Northern, Centrals, Westerns and Easterns that will compete in a domestic league. The league starts in mid-August.
This is part of the recommendations made by the International Cricket Council for the country’s quick return to the Test fold.
Hugo Ribatika, the CEO of the Northerns franchise, said moves were underway to bring back interested former national team players.
“We have been speaking to many players with regards to joining the Northerns franchise especially the former internationals who want to return to the national team,” Ribatika said.
“Barney has already agreed to sign on and we have just begun talks with Gripper.”
All the franchises have to sign their players by August 5.
Rogers (26), a talented opening batsman and Gripper (33), have been active in the game. They were part of the Red Lions team that participated in the Takashinga Premier Winter League Twenty-20 a fortnight ago.
All-rounder Doug Marillier, who played five Tests and 48 ODIs for Zimbabwe A, express bowler Campbell Macmillan are also believed to be interested in making a comeback.
The imminent return of Rogers and Gripper coincides with Tatenda Taibu’s 10-match ban.
Taibu, the country’s first choice wicketkeeper, was handed the ban by an internal Zimbabwe Cricket disciplinary committee for assaulting finance manager Esther Lupepe earlier this year.
The case has received international media attention. Taibu was acquitted of all charges by the Harare magistrates’ court due inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case.
The ban, which begins immediately but will not apply to the domestic games, means he will miss the five ODI series against Bangladesh, which will run from August 5-19.
Taibu had been training with the 19-man squad but will be left behind when the team leaves for Bulawayo Sunday.

Great news, I can't wait to see how they perform in the domestic matches.
In an article a while ago it said there was interest from overseas, and one of the countries mentioned was New Zealand. The first name that came to mind was Colin de Grandhomme, but I think Terry Duffin and Dion Ebrahim have also played in NZ recently... the latter might be a chance of returning. Only a modest batting average, but 30 Tests worth of experience.

Things are really getting interesting. Rogers was a wonderful talent when he left. No doubt the focus will be on him if he plays.

New Zealand could just mean Bradley Staddon too, for obvious reasons

. Ebrahim had a struggle at top level cricket, but his experience will surely help raise the standards of domestic circuit, if he returns.

Fantastic news indeed
I'm a big fan of
Barney Rogers. I watched him playing against WI and PAK in 2003 also agaisnt Bangladesh in 2004/05. His technique is solid. It's great to watch this left handed batsman batting. Averages 31.86 in 15 ODIs with 5 half centuries. 33 ave in FC cricket.
Trevor Gripper is an experienced batsman. A very good FC record with a best score of 234. He has got 26X50 and 5X100 in FC cricket at 33.79. I guess, he will be considered for the test side with 20 tests under the belt with a century.
I have talked about
Douglas Marillier and his value couple of days ago (
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=720). Really a gifted cricketer.
I have heard that
Campbell MacMillan once was the quickest bowler in the state. He is 27 and I reckon has got a good future ahead of him.

Zimbabwe 'rebels' poised for comeback

July 28, 2009
Trevor Gripper and Barney Rogers, two so-called "rebels" who walked out on Zimbabwe five years ago, could be about to make a comeback.
Rogers, 26, and Gripper, 33, have been approached by the board of one of the franchises in the new domestic league which begins in mid-August.
"We have been speaking to many players with regards to joining the Northerns franchise especially the former internationals who want to return to the national team," Hugo Ribatika, chief executive of Northerns, told the Standard. "Barney has already agreed to sign on and we have just begun talks with Gripper."
Doug Marillier, who played five Tests and 48 ODIs for Zimbabwe, along with Campbell Macmillan are also believed to be interested in making a comeback. All the franchises have to sign their players by August 5.
