Whereabouts of former Zimbabwean players

Post by eugene »

I know we have had lots of threads about the whereabouts of former Zimbabwean players, but they have almost always been about players who represented Zimbabwe or played domestically in the last 5-10 years. I am interested in the whereabouts of players from the 80s and 90s and how many still live in Zimbabwe. I am doing as much research as I can but I would appreciate any assistance from other forum members.

Here is a list of some of the players:

Kevin Arnott
David Brain
Gavin Briant (living in Zimbabwe)
Glen Bruk-Jackson
Iain Butchart
Mark Burmester
Donald Campbell (living in Zimbabwe)
Shane Cloete (living in Zimbabwe)
Gary Crocker (based in Hollywood, CA, USA)
Sean Davies (based in UK)
Mark Dekker
Kevin Duers
Bertus Erasmus
Eboo Essop-Adam
Craig Evans (living in Australia)
Glenn Goosen (playing cricket in UK)
Wayne James (living in Zimbabwe)
Gary Martin (living in the UK)
Brian Murphy (playing cricket in UK)
Grant Paterson
Stephen Peall
Ujesh Ranchod
Peter Rawson
Gavin Rennie (living in Zimbabwe)
John Rennie (recently added to ZC selection panel)
Ali Shah
John Traicos (living in Western Australia)
Stuart Walker
Guy Whittall (living in Zimbabwe)

This list brings back many memories, particularly how many great players Zimbabwe once had, particularly at domestic and club level.

Gary Crocker was awarded the Honorary Membership of Hollywood CC in 2009. Here is a pic.

Gavin Rennie quit Zimbabwe in 2003. He lives in Zimbabwe and is a businessman possibly. He recently appeared in a charity match in Bulawayo with fellow former players featuring his brother John, Streak, Ferreira, Ewing, James etc.

From Wikipedia:
Aged just 27, Rennie chose not to renew his contract in 2003 and instead chose to go into business, as a transport broker.

Following the information provided by zimfan1, I searched about Glenn Goosen. He is playing club cricket in UK as the captain of 1st XI of Sawston CC. Interesting, he is just 27 years old and has played 5 FC matches. Click here to see his statistics in his club website. He is a registered player in the Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire Premier League.

Hopefully so...

Found two articles in the net featuring his good batting display for his club. You can have a read at the full article going through the following links.

Link 1: http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/cn_spor ... ?id=431245
Glenn Goosen hit a sensational century for Sawston, but it was not enough to give them victory over bottom club Waresley.

Goosen scored 117 off 108 balls in a knock that included 13 fours and three sixes, and received good support from Guy Masterson (27) and Peter Richer (24) as Sawston posted 225 for 8

An unbreakable partnership between Glen Goosen and Liam Flynn helped Sawston coast to a nine-wicket victory against Godmanchester Town II.

Chasing 240 for 8, Flynn carried his bat for 70, with skipper Goosen hitting an unbeaten 91 to guide Sawston to 242 for 1.

Many thanks everyone for your help so far. I am editing/updating the original list as information is discovered. Am I right in thinking that Mark Burmester still lives in Zimbabwe? Wasn't he a key figure behind the development of the cricket ground at Mutare?
