Zimbabwe Cricket names squad for upcoming series against Kenya and Bangladesh

By: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe Cricket have included two uncapped players for an upcoming series against Kenya and Bangladesh.

The Zimbabweans will host Kenya for five one-day internationals beginning next week before flying out to Bangladesh on October 20 for a return series with the Asian side.

Trevor Garwe and Kyle Jarvis, both pace bowlers, were named in a 16-man squad and are expected to make their debuts in the two series.

Batsmen Vusi Sibanda and Chamu Chibhabha together with seamers Ed Rainsford and Tawanda Mupariwa have been dropped from the squad that lost 4-1 to Bangladesh at home in August.

Meanwhile, former captain Tatenda Taibu, who is serving a 10-match suspension, has been included in the squad although he will only complete his suspension on the Bangladesh tour.

Squad: Prosper Utseya (captain), Tatenda Taibu, Mark Vermeulen, Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Chris Mpofu, Sean Williams, Charles Coventry, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Forster Mutizwa, Malcolm Waller, Raymond Price, Trevor Garwe, Kyle Jarvis.

So looks like this is the 100% sqaud amazing to think that Kyle Jarvis is in it but looks like Alister Campbell and co are going for pace in the bowling attack with the three quickest bowlers in the country Mpofu, Jarvis and Chigumbura all in there. Looks a fairly decent sqaud to me but the real battle will be in the wicket keeping for the Bangladesh tour as we have three keepers in the sqaud but they could all get in as batsman on there own.

On the new man Trevor Garwe i think a big part of his inclusion is that he is more than handy with the bat which can help the balance of the side which was a problem in the recent Bangladesh Home series. No mention about the coach of the side so that will be one to watch will it be the Walter or the peoples choice Heath ;)

On another note how great is it to see eight black players and eight white players in the squad. An equal number to show that everyone is treated equally which hopefully is what this new Zimbabwe cricket union is all about. I.e Modern Zimbabwe :D

No Maruma??? And Jarvis is in without having played a first class or list A match... Very strange.

Okay Jarvis hasn't played a first class game, but he's probably the quickest bowler in zimbabwe at the moment next to gerald aleseni. We've been moaning for years now why we've not actually been able to find any match winning fast bowlers, and when we do, we end up disagreeing with his inclusion :(

I think the problem that a few people have here is that they (and i include myself as one of them) think that you should earn the chance to represent your country and Jarvis hasant done that, yes he is a very promising bowler but id rather him have a couple of months in the franchise system take some wickets and then earn selection on merit rather than being picked on a wim. What do bowlers such as Njube and Shringai Masakadza be thinking as they have been putting in consistant performances over that last year or so.

I think what people are missing here is that its my beleif that we are seeing the first Zimbabwe player to be picked whilst playing in another country. Im not sure if Jarvis has any intention of playing for a franchise, may this open the door for the likes of Sean Ervine and Anthony Ireland?

I am very glad to see Kyle Jarvis included. He may be untested but he has a lot more potential than some of the usual trundlers we select. Just remember many great bowlers have been plucked from obscurity, Shane Bond of New Zealand perhaps being the best example. With this squad in mind I would like the starting eleven to look like

1. Mark Vermeulen
2. Hamilton Masakadza
3. Sean Williams
4. Charles Coventry
5. Brendan Taylor
6. Forster Mutizwa/Tatenda Taibu (once suspension is over).
7. Elton Chigumbura
8. Prosper Utseya (c) (I would prefer Cremer over Utseya but I realise this isnt going to happen)
9. Ray Price
10. Kyle Jarvis
11. Chris Mpofu

Assuming that this AP report is correct, i have to say that i'm very surprised to see both Tawanda Mupariwa and Ed Rainsford left out of the Bangladesh tour. The seam bowling will be relying on just 2 experienced men, Elton Chigumbura and Christopher Mpofu, with Trevor Garwe, Hamilton Masakadza and Kyle Jarvis the remaining seamers, hopefully Jarvis will arrive with a bang, as will Garwe, if not then all the work is going to fall back on Prosper Utseya, Ray Price and Graeme Cremer again, personally i wonder if AP have made a mistake and that it should be Mupariwa in the squad rather than Jarvis.

My biggest hope is that the batsmen will all click at the same time, with the firepower now available the team should be capable of putting some big scores on the board.

Zim must surely go into this Kenyan series as red hot favourites and be in with a really good shout in Bangladesh as well.

I would like to see Maruma in the team I mean what justifies Waller's inclussion. Maruma has done all thats needed to justify his inclussion. His currently the leading wicket taker in the Logan cup with 18 wickets what more can u ask for. And he has proved to be more than handy with the bat. If he performances well in the intercontinental cup I think his should go on into the national team or I will personally launch a protest at all the Kenya games for DUBIOUS SELECTION.

Good to see Mpofu back in he has been in good nick of late. Lets hope he can transform his domestic form to the international stage. I think Garwe is an underated player. His got pace and genarates a lot of movement and his pretty handy with the bat too.

Sometimes there are one day bowlers and Test bowlers. Tymcen Maruma has extravagant leg spin and he will be expensive in the one day format. But in a Test match he will be perfect.
