Current Fast Bowlers: Are They the Fastest Ever?

Post by Kriterion_BD »

Just watching BD vs NZ and Ferguson was consistently around 150 kph throughout the innings. His fastest that I saw was 154.0 which is 95.7 mph. That is seriously quick.

But a number of bowlers can clock 150 so this makes me ask, are today's quicks faster than at any other time?

New Zealand have found a plethora of fast bowlers over the past 4 years.

Trent Boult,
Lockie Ferguson,
Adam Milne,
Scot Kuggelign bowled a delivery at 152Kph in the recent T20 series.

90mph is rapid, but 95mph is express and pretty much impossible to handle in the right conditions. I seriously wouldn't want to face somebody like Lockie Ferguson, as he generally bowls a bang in length; Milne is muchy fuller but still raw ansd fast.

Somebody who has crepped under the radar is Olivier from SA, jesus. Now he's got some pace. I don't think i've ever seen anybody bowl a heavier ball since Umar Gul for Pakistan. The guy makes it climb through and even De Kock recently said the past few months have been tough in terms of wicket keeping due to Duanne Olivier.

Oshane Thomas, Shannon Gabrial, KG Rabada, even Kumara from Sri Lanka all pusgh the 90mph bracket. I agree that this generation surely has to be one of the quickest in history.
I've not even touched on the Indian fast bowlers

Yes this generation have produced plenty of guys who can consistently hit 145kph-150kkph with the occasional 155kph ball, but there isn't that guy who can hit 160kph like a Brett Lee, Shaun Tait or Shoaib Aktar

No that's exactly what I was thinking, actually.
in the 2003 Cricket World Cup, I can remember the 'pace race,' as the media put it, between Akhtar and Lee as to who would break the 100mph barrier.
Akhtar hit 100 against England and Lee bowled a ball against Marvin Attapatu at 99.9mph.
There was even guys like Shane Bond, Nehra and Ntini who were bowling absolutely rapid in that tournament.
Nobody apart from Lockie Ferguson is bowling mid 150's consistently, and certainly nobody is breaking that 100mph barrier anymore.
I hope we get another Pakistani kid who rocks up like Mohammed Sami did in 2003.

I think Starc clocked 160 - that too in a Test match.

Generally every fast medium bowler clocks 150 on Australian speed guns.

Rabada is not as quick as Thomas, Gabriel, or Kumara AFAIK. He bowls plenty of balls in the 138-140 range.

Here is a list of the guys who can consistently reach 90 mph (145 km/h)...its a fairly long list:

Cummins, Starc (Hazelwood just a yard slower) - Australia
Wahab, Hasan Ali, (probably a few random others) - Pakistan
Wood - England
Boult, Ferguson, Milne - New Zealand
Rabada, Olivier, Ngidi - South Africa
Gabriel, Joseph, Thomas - West Indies
Kumara, Chameera - Sri Lanka
Bumrah, Shami, Umesh - India
Dawlat - Afghanistan
Taskin - Bangladesh

For BD, Rubel only hits 145 a couple times a year which is not often enough to make the list. I'm not even sure he has that pace anymore. If Ebadat Hossain and Khaled Ahmed can reach 90 mph a couple times each innings during the NZ Test series, I'll add them to the list.

There are quite a few more bowlers who can bowl 140+ consistently, but about half of the guys above can often enough reach 150, which is impressive.

Dale Steyn is a glaring omission there sir. He regularly has bowled in the mid 140's and touched 152 against Pakistan.

Roach ???

I can’t ever remember Starc getting to 160kpm which test was that?

Australia don’t make fast pitches anymore 😢

Roach barely hits 140 now...he's a medium pacer. Granted a very good one. But he was express when he first started out.

Here's the Starc 160.

To me Steyn was always a bowler who bowled around 135-140 and occaisionally quicker. I always felt he was just a fast medium bowler in terms of the speeds he actually hit.
