Not a big fan of T20, but I usually follow the World Cup somewhat closely. There's always usually an upset or two in every edition. I guess thats what T20 is good for.

Will be interesting to see if any surprise team wins the whole thing.

There are no clear favourites, obviously if there has to be one then it is India. I don't know who else???

We have seen English players like Livingstone, Morgan struggling big time on sluggish UAE wickets, none of the other foreign players have done anything significant in the IPL at least with the bat, again this tells me that non-subcontinent teams will be at a significant disadvantage.

Sri Lanka are not doing good and Afghanistan are not yet a championship winning team to add to that they are going through a difficult time in their country as well as in their cricket board, so this leaves us with Pakistan and Bangladesh amongst the other aubcontinent nations that are likely to do well. The problem for Bangladesh will be that they will win 1st round group and make it to Group B along with India and Pakistan so this is a really really tough group.

If I were to suggest Bangladesh, I would deliberately want to finish 2nd in 1st round to avoid Group B and be placed in Group A for better chances of making it to the semis.

My Semi final picks:

India
Pakistan
West Indies
South Africa

^ South Africa is a brave and I'd say quite left-field call to make the semi's. On what basis? I think they'll be doing well to finish in the top 7 or 8 tbh.

For my predictions I'll plump for a comfortable India win. Windies, England & NZ as semi-finalists. Namibia will get in the Super 12s and a win or two over a big full member whilst they are there.

Cricinfo's preview seems to suggest Namibia are the weakest of the Associates at this WC. They might win a game in the prelim round, but a) they have maybe a 33% shot at making the Super 12s, and that is probably being generous and b) if they make the Super 12s, they have exactly 0% chance of beating any teams there.

Why not just say India will win the WC, if they play their absolute best and can manage to somehow get past Namibia (who will have to make some mistakes for Kohli's boys to have a realistic chance)?

Yes because ESPNCricinfo have such an excellent track record of analysing associate cricket dont they.

Why can’t half the global cricketing community form an opinion different to what is published on cricinfo as if it is the New Testament itself? Or at least tolerate someone’s opinion and *prediction* (Google the definition of prediction) based on watching a team or a player over several years?

Pet hate of mine regarding some cricket fans.

Praise be to the almighty cricketing god of cricinfo

Nonsense of the highest order. Exceptional!

I wonder if they predicted Hong Kong would beat a certain team in 2014?

Sorry for the painful reminder. If it's any comfort Munir Dar (remember the name?) is a friendly chap - had the pleasure of meeting him briefly and shaking his hand when he came to HKCC to play a game in 2015.

Peter Della Penna covers Associate cricket and seems to know quite a lot about a lot of the teams. He reckons Oman are leading associate in this WC. IDK about that but I would imagine the strongest contenders will end up being Ireland, Netherlands, and Scotland.

very very hard to judge which associate team is the best. Theyre all pretty similarly matched. Good for the game of cricket

I will be surprised if Ireland win a single game tbh. Group of death and on paper they are the weakest of the 4.

My predictions would be;

Group A
1 Sri Lanka
2 Namibia
3 Netherlands
4 Ireland

Group B
1 Scotland
2 Bangladesh
3 Oman
4 PNG

(I put Bangladesh lower solely to annoy Kriterion tbh :D . They'll almost certainly win the group lol :W: )

As you say though these teams are always unpredictable. There's not a huge difference between any of them and I include SL & Ban in that. Hard to know how the associates will deal with conditions too. I wonder if we will see relatively low-scoring pitches like we have in the IPL?
