World Cup League 2 (2019-2023)

Post by Kriterion_BD »

Not sure if a thread already exists for the bottom 7 ODI teams (14th to 20th ranked sides), but a truly remarkable match just played out between Namibia and UAE.

Namibia were in tatters at 83 for 7 batting first, but David Wiese and Frylink led them to a respectable and defendable total of 206, batting out the full 50 overs.

In response, UAE slumped to 40 for 4 last time I checked the score before heading to bed, and were 53 for 6, before their own rearguard led them to a most unlikely win by 3 wickets.

Has there ever been an ODI where both sides lost their top 6 for 50 odd, but also ended up posting 200+???

Truly remarkable game!

Anyways...for those who may not know...the top 3 in the L2 will qualify for the World Cup Qualifier next year in Zimbabwe. They will be joined by the bottom 5 from the Super League and the top 2 from the Challenge Leagues A and B.

Current League 2 standings:

Oman
Scotland
UAE
USA
Namibia
Nepal
PNG

However, this is highly misleading as the ICC is almost sure to go to percentage of points (or points per match played) to decide fairly due to covid-cancellations. By percentage, Scotland is currently topping the chart, followed by Oman, UAE, Namibia, Nepal, USA, and lastly PNG who have 0 points.

PNG having lost all 12 of their matches are surely cooked. But the other 6 teams are quite close in points and so any 3 of them could potentially progress.

Namibia's match from two days ago was also remarkable too. They were 50-7 batting first but ended up winning by 110 runs! I forget they stream all these games live on the ICC website nowadays - I'll have to tune in sometime.

Not part of League 2 but PNG (last placed L2 with 1 win from a dozen odd games) just whitewashed Nepal 2-0 in Nepal.

Nepal have been a neither here nor there Associate for the past 20 years it seems. Whereas Afghanistan has made great progress, Nepal never seems to make any at all. This despite the fact that cricket is very popular there as it is everywhere in Soutb Asia. And they have a relatively stable country from what I can tell. Shocking that they are consistently so mediocre.
