Welch Jr is just a kid having fun and playing cricket. That’s all. And it’s healthy for a 17 year old. There is no pigeonhole with him. He’s just going with the flow.BostonZimbo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 4:59 pmWelch Jr is typically an opener correct? I saw that he was batting down the order in the T20ssecretzimbo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 3:31 pmBoth run out unfortunately. Saul was fucked over by Chamu lol. Think they looked good - Welch is a very classy, technical player. Saul hit a big six which was satisfying. Heaps of talent in them both, and other kids coming through. Zim's future with the bat is very exciting tbh.

Perhaps, but of those 12 "obvious" first teamers, Marumani, K-long, and Musakanda all average under 15 in ODIs. Fifteen. Only Musakanda looks like he has the ability to increase his batting average significantly. In that context, guys like Chamu, Kasuza, or even Kaia can't be but a rolled ankle nay a papercut away from getting into the main XI.secretzimbo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 12:11 pm
Tbf, a lot of these players may have past experience but a fair few of them - especially the batsmen - are very very far from current first team selection. I don't think Kasuza & Kaia have ever been in the conversation in white ball either. There's 8 or 9 batsmen ahead of any of these guys currently. BT, Ervine, Williams, Raza, Burl, Shumba, Marumani, Myers, Wes, K-long, Musakanda, Chakabva - there's 12 that would be picked for their batting alone ahead of any of these currently. Even Maruma too.
Ndlovu is probably 4th choice in the spin department as well.
Nyauchi, Mumba, Chivanga is our 'A' pace attack though, fair enough.
You have the Big 4 (all 35+ in age) plus Wes, Chakabva and Burl who are clearly ahead of everyone. Plus Myers on potential. Thats 8 guys who are obvioust first teamers...thats bascially just one XI, especially with ZIM's favored 8-3 lineup. So who would be the next 7 batters? Shumba, Mutumbami, Kasuza, Chari, Chamu, Kaia, Maruma on domestic form. Thats the A team. The next 7 batters would be your Emerging or Academy side.
As for the youngsters, lots of potential in Wes and Myers. Myers is the most talented IMO. He's on a different level even to Wes. Wes is currently an improved version of Musakanda ie what Tari would be if he consistently scored 50 before getting out. But thats Wes' strongsuit - he has at least converted a handful of starts very early in his career.

But one thing I just have to pull you up on; you don't think Marumani has the potential to increase his average?!??!?!
I first watched him play live when he was 11. And have seen him in-person about a dozen or more times since. He has more potential than anyone currently in Zimbabwe in the shortest format.

yeah lmao marumani is pretty young and he dominated that t20 comp. Clearly has a fair amoutn of shots and can belt 6s
Re: Zimbabwe Emerging vs Namibia
Getting whitewashed by Namibia cannot be a good sign. Let's see how Namibia go in the World Cup, it will give us an idea if they are really this good.
As for the 2nd ODI, some positives in Mumba, he can be another contender for that all rounders slot, but as of now Tiripano and Jongwe are far ahead of him.

I'm just basing it on my observations. In the current ODI era, the elite batters average 50+ (Babar, Root, R Taylor all average high 50s, to 60+) with Kohli averaging just over 70. Just to compare, Tendulkar only averaged 44-45 for his career.secretzimbo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:21 pmThis post is full of so much dross it's not really worth my time.

Class batters average 40+. BT and Williams lead the way for Zimbabwe and they average in the low 40s I believe.
Batters who average 35+ are average international standard batsmen. Guys like Ervine, Raza, Mahmudullah. These guys would most likely find a spot in the XIs of most teams, but probably not in an Indian, English, or Aussie first XI.
Anyone who averages under 30 after playing a sufficient number of innings cannot be considered a batsmen at ODI level. Marumani is going to have to improve his game by heaps and leaps to average 30 against bowlers like Starc, Cummins, Bumrah, Shaheen, or Boult. I think Shumba is a better product, but he too has much to work on. Myers is the closest to a finished product followed by Wesley, but Myers will have to work on kicking on past 30 and Wesley past 55-60.

dude, these guys are all under the age of 21. We should be waiting 3 or 4 years at least before making a judgement. Jeez man, dont think there are any 20 or 19 olds who are up to the standard you are talking aboutKriterion_BD wrote: ↑Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:20 amI'm just basing it on my observations. Au contraire. Babar Azam was 21 when he debuted a few years ago and was averaging 50+ in ODIs right from the start. I'll admit I was skeptical of his prowess, but I recognize that he's a class batter. Kane Williamson debuted at 20 and is another example, albeit he was probably averaging 30-35 in his first year or two. Even Kusal Mendis (tremendous talent) was averaging 30 when he debuted at 21.slcricfan1 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:35 am

Secondarily, I'm not expecting any of these guys to average 50, but I would understand if they averaged 30 like Wesley (Myers is pretty close too).

Re: Zimbabwe Emerging vs Namibia
williamson averaged 24.5 in his first year, 67 in his next but this was boosted by not outs cuz he had one century and no fifties and then he had an average of 27 in his next year. Rohit had like 3 fifties in his first 3 years. Smith didnt average above 30 until 4 years in. Warner had 2 50s in his first 2 years.Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:51 amAu contraire. These guys have plenty of time to catch up, you`re being very pessimistic.

This Kriterion guy is actually out here trying to criticise and do down Zimbabwean schoolboys because they aren’t Babar Azam and Kane Williamson !
