Under 19s thread. Players and under 19 matches
Re: Under 19s thread. Players and under 19 matches
Where's Tanaka Zvaita? He's a decent batsman, how he hasn't made that side is highly questionable.

Good point, this appears to be the main squad but yeah I'm sure there'll be a few reserves as well especially with Covid.
Forgot about Zvaita, he's another who's missed out. Looks like our top six is pretty settled though, with Taruvinga & Makoni back-ups.
I hear Tashinga is related to Tanunurwa Makoni yeah - I will guess brothers but not sure. They are both Givemore's nephews I believe, not his sons.

Bhawa needs to come good, he has not had a good time of it in England with the bat. I heard he only had one half century this last season, which is really weird. I'd have bet he would have made a pile of runs.
Re: Under 19s thread. Players and under 19 matches
I was just trying to catch up on Bhawa's cricket in UK, can't find much. The last time he captained any side was when he was 12 years old. Thats a bit alarming. You can't just give him the captaincy because he went to the previous world cup, plus he hasn't been here for the local games so no-one knows what his captaincy will be like. I'm guessing Bennet is the vice-captain?

Yep Brian is the VC.
I wonder who will end up with the gloves. Presumed it would be Saul as he kept in Namibia and all the initial U19 games but Wolhuter has the gloves today and Taruvinga is a good keeper as well.

Is Connor Mitchell the leggie? Or is he an offie? My memory fails me.

This is a headscratcher, Welch is clearly the best keeper but has not kept for a yearsecretzimbo wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 1:16 pmYep Brian is the VC.

Re: Under 19s thread. Players and under 19 matches
I watched Saul against Namibia and he didn't always look comfortable keeping to spin. Many times he took the ball he'd push his knees together as if he was half expecting to drop it, it just throws you off balance and makes it difficult to take the bails off if its a wide take and you sometimes find yourself half a step too far back. You'd find he wouldn't do it in a drill without a batsman at the crease, it's the batter putting him off a bit, so not an easy habit to fix. He's got decent hands though.
I think it's a big ask to open the batting and keep, particularly if the team fields first. There's a few guys that do it, but it's unusual. You have to be uber fit.
It's good to have a keeper that has a bit of a mouth, particularly at u19 level because a lot of the batsmen react.
That's one of the reasons I enjoyed Murray, he could have made Mother Theresa slap him.
You don't seem to see much specialist keeper coaching here. Elsewhere keepers spend hours doing drills and honing their skills. The keeper needs to be so reliable you take it for granted that he won't drop a ball or miss a stumping. It's similar to slip fielders, they are specialists and spend ages catching, we don't see that either.
Connor Mitchell is a leggie. He was Hellenic but finished his schooling in SA. It's going to be interesting to watch him.
