Welch has had 3 full domestic seasons now.
23/24 - Poor
24/25 - Highest season total in the Logan Cup, since it was reduced to 8 matches. Forced his way into international cricket by weight of runs, albeit very recent runs.
25/26 - Back to poor, although a lot of fast starts that were not converted, so lots of scores between 20-50.
Overall domestic record across these 3 years is pretty good actually, but not outstanding.

This would be my take on the Campbell brothers, from a purely aesthetic "eye test" point of view.sloandog wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 9:05 amSurely matty welch isn't done. I know he's had a poor season but to write him off would be a bit much.
Yea its a strange one, with Nick. He's evidently got what it takes to score runs internationally, yet he absolutely has struggled domestically when less talented players have thrived. I've never watched matt Campbell or Jono Campbell bat but everyone says they're quite limited players.
Taruvinga looks to be a prospect
Jono is quite crouched in his stance, and a little bottom hand dominant. Sometimes defence can look a little leaky because of this. On the plus side, he is strong square of the wicket. He also likes to play aerially when he gets the chance, and has a reasonable level of power. Bowling may have regressed a bit - Has bowled medium pace at times this year.
Matt is quite pleasing technically, in my opinion. More upright, and looks to play with the full face more, but it also quick to jump on the swivel pull. Good scoring options against seam in red ball cricket. Doesn't appear to have the same big shot options against slow bowling at the moment though, which is probably what has kept him out of T20 sides so far. Bowling - Has had mixed success across different formats, but looks to have a technically correct off-spin action, which should allow him to bowl both accurately, and impart reasonable revolutions.

What IS talent?eugene wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 10:30 pmPeople talk about limited players and talented players etc but ultimately what matters is runs. Most people said Brian Bennett was limited and would be found out against good bowling, yet he is gone on to be one of our most successful batsmen of the the last 25 years. Vusi Sibanda was talented but never kicked on. I think talent can be overrated, temperament is really the more important factor. In defence of Nick Welch, he has scored 3 test 50s in 7 matches along with a 49 and a 47* so he can clearly bat and perhaps those innings carry far greater weight than domestic runs? That being said, domestic form does have to count for something.
Looking slick in the nets to me isnt it.

Good point, cricket is a weird sport where a batsman might be the same against 3rd grade bowling and intenational. Ive seen it alot where players transcend levels. Ive seen the opposite too.
Off spin bowlers are similar. I dont think Ray Price for example starts taking 6 fers in the NPL. He troubles them the same way he would trouble an international player and the batsmen mitigate them in largely the same way.
