I think unrealistic expectations are hampering us all. Last year Taylor mentioned that the franchise system was the first time he was surrounded by such professionalism. And that system was launched in 2009. We can't expect Taylor to be as consistent as the Sri Lankan top order, for instance. Our first question is: do the players have talent to succeed at the international level? The answer is yes. Price, Taibu, Chiggs have earned contracts in England and India at some point. Williams, Taylor, Shingi, Ervine, Cremer etc. all look like they have what it takes. The second question is: what have the administrators done to support this talent? From 2005-2009 not much but since then a hell lot more. Next question becomes: is selection policy flawed? To my mind no, Hammie fiasco excluded. Clearly we need a more consistent approach, we need predictability of policy and we also need well reasoned selections. A particular decision might not work but it must be reasonably argued. Trying Coventry at the top was one such thing (but not at the world cup - and it wouldn't have been necessary if Hammie had taken his rightful place anyway). But logic is all we need to ask for.

Now having said that, I will admit to being one of those who had unwarranted optimism about this world cup. Beating Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan was always a tough ask but we also underestimated New Zealand's competitiveness and overestimated our own. When I read that Butcher had said this world cup was four years too early for our group of players, I laughed but now having thought about it, I tend to agree. No need to overreact with administrators, coaches, selectors or even players. Trust the system we have put in place, improve it first (like more age group coaches as suggested) then in four years' time we will have the right to overreact when we perform as dismally as this year.
