Lymington have swooped to sign “miracle” man Craig Ervine – the Zimbabwean Test cricketer who was once close to having his hand amputated.
Ervine, the younger brother of Hampshire star Sean Ervine, has joined the Southern Premier League outfit as their overseas player for the coming season.
The 26-year-old all-rounder has played two Test matches for Zimbabwe and also lined up in the World Twenty20 Cup in 2010 and last year’s ICC World Cup.
Predominantly a left-handed batsman, Ervine, who plays for the Matabeleland Tuskers, is also an off-spin bowler and has beaten the odds to forge a career in professional cricket.

A freak accident in his early teens – when he slipped and fell on broken glass at the family home – required a three-hour reconstructive operation to his right hand.
However, but for the intervention of his mother – who was a nurse during wartime – Ervine would have had his hand amputated as the initial diagnosis had been grim.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Echo, Ervine said: “I went home from school one weekend and my two brothers decided we should have a game of cricket in the garden.
“I climbed on top of the pelmet to get some keys and my foot slipped off the window sill. My hand went through the window and I ended up landing on the jagged pieces of glass.
“It split open my wrist and I was rushed to hospital where the doctor said they would have to amputate the hand. Fortunately, my mum is a retired nurse and she said they needed to try to do the best they could and see what they could do. They managed to sew it up. It was a miracle!
“I am very lucky to have a mum like her because she knew exactly what to do so it was a blessing. It does still affect me a little but it is something I have got used to.”
In August 2011, Ervine faced Bangladesh in Zimbabwe’s first Test following the country’s six-year exile. And just seven months ago, he hit 49 in his second Test against Pakistan, the hosts including highly-rated spinner Saeed Ajmal in their attack.
At last year’s ICC World Cup in India, Ervine top scored with 66 as Zimbabwe completed their group matches with a convincing win over Kenya, while at the World Twenty20 Cup in the Caribbean in 2010, he helped his country to victory over Australia in a warm-up game.
Ervine, who will undertake some coaching duties with Lymington, is also hoping to play for Hampshire seconds this season. His stay in England was arranged through former Lymington captain Christian Pain and Funky Sports, sponsors of Sean Ervine.
“I am looking forward to the season,” added Ervine, who is due to turn out for Lymington in a friendly at Bashley today. “It benefits me coming over and is good to play on different wickets and in different conditions.”
Re: Zimbabwe Players Abroad (2012 Season)
Signed for Ewhurst CC (Surrey County League)Brighton Mugochi (23) is a talented left-arm spinner who made a big impact on Zimbabwe’s domestic circuit during his debut season whilst still in his teens back in 2006/07. Playing for Centrals, he took 19 wickets at 20.84 at first-class level, including a best of 5-69.
He continued to shine the following year, as his 24 wickets at 19.87 saw young Mugochi top the first-class wicket-charts, ahead of international spinners Ray Prize, Prosper Utseya and Graeme Cremer.
He struggled to repeat this success in 2008/09, only taking 14 wickets at 31.50, but was picked up by the Mid-West Rhino’s Franchise in 2009/10, but failed to get much game. Mugochi has since struggled to break back into the first-class arena, despite being part of the Mountaneers (2010/11) and Mashonaland Eagles (2011/12) squads over the past few years.
He remains a strong spinner though, who is eager to spend a summer in England plying his trade in order to return to Zimbabwean domestic cricket in 2012/13.
To compliment his playing ability, he is also a qualified coach with experience coaching in South Africa as part of Ryan Maron’s Cricket School of Excellence. He has also coached at several high schools and filled a player/coach role for Eagles Cricket Club in Botswana.

Re: Zimbabwe Players Abroad (2012 Season)
IT would take a brave man to stick his neck out and nominate a winner of this year’s Drakes League Premiership.
But if it was possible to get an each way bet on the outcome, then backing Delph &Dobcross to be in the Byrom Shield shake-up come September would seem a pretty sound investment.
As previously stated, they would probably have won it last year, had it not been for the weather, although I’m sure Kirkburton would have something to say about that, as they too were hampered by abandoned matches.
And with what, at least on paper, looks an even stronger side this season, popular skipper Grant Jones looks to have every chance of delivering some silverware to the surprisingly bare Delph & Dobcross trophy cabinet.
Delph have recruited two players who should more than make up for the loss of all-rounder Bilal Khiljee, who has moved on to Shelley after four years at the Huddersfield Road club during which time his only success was in the old Examiner Twenty/20 in his first season when he took four wickets on the way to beating Honley in the final.
The first new signing is that of 20-year-old Zimbabwean batsman Kevin Hook, who is playing in his second season in the UK after impressing last summer with Swinton Moorside who play in the Manchester Association, where he scored 1,200 runs.
A tall and elegant left-hander opener, Hook has played half-a-dozen matches with Zimbabwe’s Under 19s against South Africa in Harare, and made a quick impression on his new Delph teammates, when hitting a half-century first up against Hall Bower last Saturday.
It was never going to be an easy track to bat on given the amount of rain recently, but it took Hook just 43 balls to reach 51, which included five glorious sixes and a couple of fours, and served notice that there should be plenty more to come this season.
The second signing Matt Norvall, is not a newcomer however, having played with Delph in 2010 before he too played at Swinton Moorside last season. The 26-year-old is a fellow Zimbabwean, but unlike Hook, Norvall is English qualified having lived over here for a number of years.
A medium quick bowler, Norvall had an average start to his Drakes career in 2010, but blossomed as the season went on to finish with 40 wickets. And he is also a useful batsman, as he he showed in the Sykes Cup final, when he made an unbeaten 48 against Skelmanthorpe.
“Kevin looks a very useful batter, and we signed Matt to replace Bilal, who did a cracking job for us while he was at Delph,” said Jones.
“To be honest, Matt found it hard to start with when he came a couple of seasons back, but then began to find his feet, and was playing pretty well right up to the final against Skelmanthorpe, when he was bowling really well against Wasim Jaffer, until suddenly he pulled up with a leg injury after bowling just four-and-a-half overs.”
That virtually ended Norvall’s season and Delph’s hopes of winning the League (they went on to finish third that season) although losing three of their last nine matches to the rain didn’t help the cause!
Norvall will be expecting to be one half of the opening bowling attack this season along with Adnan Ghaus, who is back for a second season after being recruited by Khiljee who he plays alongside back in Pakistan.
Last term Ghaus bagged 58 League and Sykes Cup wickets and is already threatening to top that after starting with a terrific eight for 20 haul against Hall Bower in the season opener.
A genuinely fast bowler on his day, Ghaus has played a handful of matches with both Derbyshire and Lancashire Seconds, but should be available for Delph all season, unlike Red Rose first teamer Kyle Hogg.
“Hoggy is still registered with us, but I’m not really expecting him to play any games with us this season,” added Jones.
“I am excited about the prospects with Adnan however. I think fitness was a bit of an issue with him last season, but he now looks a lot sharper and has definitely put some pace on.”
Whether or not Ghaus gets another call for Lancashire remains to be seen, but one Delph player who is definitely rated very highly by the county is Arron Lilley, who has now been awarded a Lancashire scholarship contract this season.
“Speaking to the coaches at Lancashire (Jones spent a number of years on Lancashire’s books as a wicketkeeper/batsman) I know they rate Arron very highly, where they consider him a model professional.”
This year promises to be a big season for Lilley, who showed his all-rounder capabilities last season when he averaged over 32 with the bat, despite usually batting down at 5 or 6, while he also collected 43 wicket; skippered the Huddersfield Under 21s to White Rose Trophy success, and was named as the League’s Reg Haigh Trophy winner as the Most Promising Young Cricketer of the Year.
He also opened his account last week in enterprising fashion with a lightning 80 off just 68 balls with five sixes and six fours, and also picked up a couple of wickets for good measure.
Elsewhere the Delph team is pretty much the same as last year, with Irfan Zahoor, Bruce Cruse, Faisal Butt and Graeme Simpson, plus the skipper himself almost guaranteed to keep the club in the forefront of all competitions.
“We led the Premiership for almost 75% of the season last year, but one or two games went the wrong way weather-wise for us, and I’m afraid one thing you can’t beat is the weather.”
Well after week one they are already one game better off than two of their top flight rivals who were rained off. As the season continues to unfold, there will undoubtedly be a few Delph and Dobcross heads looking skywards come the weekend!
