What a comeback by Mark Andrew Vermeulen!

I was quite disappointed noticing the previous innings of Vermeulen in the Faithwear and 2 matches in Logan Cup. There wasn't any big innings although in his comeback innings in both Faithwear and Logan Cup, he top scored for Westerns scoring in the 40's. Playing for Zimbabwe 'A' agaisnt Namibia, he did well in an innings scoring 80, the only half century after his return,BUT that wasn't a official domestic one day. Again, playing in 2 rounds in the Logan Cup, he was ruled out for remaining part after having finger injury. The return of Vermeulen in the national side seemed fader and fader while the other batsmen scored many runs in the Logan Cup.

But NOW, after recovering from finger injury he made his domestic Twenty-20 debut and his opening 4 innings are as follows:

MA Vermeulen b Musoso 74(42) 6X4, 6X6 Striking Rate: 176.19 vs Easterns
MA Vermeulen lbw b Chibhabha 108(54) 10X4, 6X6 Strking rate: 200.00 vs Centrals
MA Vermeulen b Cremer 53(27) 9X4, 1X6 Striking Rate: 196.30 vs Northerns
MA Vermeulen lbw b Maruma 47(28) 6X4, 2X6 Striking Rate: 167.86 vs Eastenrs

Playing 4 domestic T-20 he has scored 282 runs at 70.50 with 2X50, 1X100 and a highest score of 108 and has a striking rate of 186.75. He has hit 31 boundaries and 15 sixes!

I predicted that he will be the leading run scorer of Logan Cup but now is topping the batting chart of Metropolitan Bank Twenty-20 2009. If he takes this devastating form into the remaining matches, no one can eradicate him from returning in the national squad whenever it's announced.

i think he has definitely put himself back in the mix for national selection but at the moment there are quite a few players with similar ability battling for positions so im not sure if he would make the sqaud if Taylor and Williams were available, we also need to remember the fact that the board don't want to may white players in the side and im not sure if they could stretch to five

As the saying goes, form is temporary but class is permanent. As if the average wasn't impressive enough (70.50), Vermeulen's strike rate is phenomenal - 186.75. This certainly makes the next ODI squad selection very interesting, it is hard to look past such good performances. And we know the selectors would love another aggressive opening batsman (from the Zhuwawo experiment).

Looks like the games have been very close too - some ties, last ball victories, etc. Two tied matches is quite amazing, it just goes to show how Twenty20 brings teams closer together. Would have been a great tournament to be at.

I don't think it's as far fetched now as it was a few years ago. ZC's team selections since the Canada T20 have been very promising.

Easterns favourites as Twenty20 roar into life

AFTER a terrific season during which they won the Faithwear Series and Logan Cup in style, the Steven Mangongo coached Easterns go into Wednesday Twenty20 opener against Westerns as favourites for the title come Saturday.
Easterns have been impressive in the season they have beaten their bitterest rivals to second place in both the One Day Faithwear Series and the four day Logan Cup. They open their account against Westerns in the first match in the morning at Queens Sports Club before engaging Northerns in the afternoon 20 over match at Bulawayo Athletics Club.

Their dominance is set to continue as they have lost none of their players who have been instrumental in their domestic competition this season. Captain Hamilton Masakadza will have Prosper Utseya, Stuart Matskenyeri, Timycen Maruma, Johnson Marumisa, Foster Mutizwa, Shingi Masakadza and Douglas Hondo for company in another of their demolition missions.

Although Northerns have run them close in both competitions, they have failed with the last push losing all their matches on the last day despite having done enough to pip them. Northerns too have a strong side featuring captain Elton Chigumbura, Tatenda Taibu, Raymond Price, Graeme Cremer, Regis Chakabva and Cephas Zhuwawo.

Centrals and Westerns have failed to exert their authority in the said competitions and very little is expected from them in the T20, a competition renowned for its in-your-face bowling and swashbuckling God-will-take-care batting.

Anything could happen, but still Easterns are favourites to win it again, although Northerns could conjure something to change the script and yet it could be Mangongo again when the curtain comes down on Saturday.
