As for Tiffin, I looked him up earlier and he hasn’t umpires an international for 18 months which is in line with my memory of where I saw his name on a scorecard last. Can’t see any retirement announcements, I’d say he just got dumped. He wasn’t up to it internationally like Sloan said.
I’ve seen through a mate what it takes to rise up the ranks in umpiring. He’s just cracked the BBL now but it is so cut throat. Most competitive place in cricket. To be fair there really is no room for a passenger. Too many dedicating their lives to the dream, studying an hour the players names the night before. Sacrificing a paid career to do mid week rep gigs. Having to keep mind and body alert and healthy, and feigning off the ex players (like Reiffel) who get fast tracked to the top.
Tiffin was TV Umpire in Zim's last home series (v UAE last April) but he hasn't done any Logan Cup this season.
Congrats to your mate. Good insight
Sounds like Tiffin got a demotion.
Barely scratched the surface on the umpiring career thing too.
You basically need to make it your life ambition at the expense of your....life.
It’s actually where Forster Mutizwa has an advantage in his career. Ex player in a small system given a big standin on the word stage.
In the big 3 countries, You can’t really have a white collar concurrent career. You have to give up competitive sport
Sure, you could play casual touch football on Wednesday nights if you don’t make a big deal of it, but forget competitive or weekend sport.
In the off season you have a lot more time but to progress, you’re expected to set aside a week or two midweek for an aboriginal 4 day Carnival or something.
He will need to take equivalent of 6 weeks working days off a year whilst establishing himself.
After 8 years, he got sent back to 2nd grade because he didn’t call a short run which was picked up by everyone, including a both captains and a fellow umpire, no doubt in competition with ambitions.
He is lucky in the sense he has a supervisor job. They are sympathetic to his umpiring and give him the time he needs.
However, he hates it, and in return for that generosity he earns much lower than someone else in that role. Probably about 15k less in his contract. And he is expected to put in extra on top of that.
But that’s what he does and what he will do. He is driven and spends his free time studying the stranger laws of the game.
He has a great rep and I really think he will make it to the international stage.
