Yes, that's also why it's probably too late for Marumani. Technique shouldn't be something you learn on the job. If he hasn't picked it up by now I don't expect he will.

By all accounts he was very academically challenged and out of place at his scholarship school (Falcon). Not a smart kid at all. That's gonna be his downfall tbh.

He's an incredible athlete though. That 2020 u19 batch were a very fit and athletic group but Marumani wiped the floor with them on every fitness test or drill. Beast.

He's in a big malaise right now and looks absolutely terrible. I mean truly truly awful. But he's got something. I've seen him hit about 80 off 30 balls in an otherwise low-scoring school game and the bowler left the field in tears. See some of his performances in that U19WC. And dominating the domestic T20 in his debut season. You don't win player of the tournament as a 19-year-old, in debut season, in a senior pro T20 tournament without having something.

Speaking of fitness, by contrast I notice most of this 2022 batch look like weedy little kids or fat overweight ones.

The 2020 lot really were well prepared and drilled.

I think we are being too hard on Marumani and letting the non-existent/poor coaching go unscathed. A good coach will harness the athleticism and hitting power of a Marumani to get the best out of him. He will never have crisp technique like Sibanda and Amla, but with proper coaching, not whatever he’s getting from Matsikanyeri and Rajput (when he’s bothered to show up), he could be a poor-man’s Chris Gayle and trust me, a discount-value Chris Gauls will be better that all current Zim openers combined. I assume the coaching staff at Falcon College knew how to get the best out of him.

His poor form since turning pro is probably something Murali, Malinga, Dhoni would have endured if they were subjected to by-the-book, highly theoretical coaching. Sometimes you’ve got to let the kid with the horrendous technique continue, with minor tweaking. Chris Gayle debuted as a low-order slogger who could bowl spin…yet retired as one of the best test batsmen and LOI batsmen of all time.
