KYLE College from Masvingo ended the four year dominance of Harare schools at the Petra Twenty20 schools cricket tournament when they floored Churchill by eight wickets to clinch this year’s tournament in the final played at Petra High School in Bulawayo yesterday.
Since 2010 Churchill and Prince Edward had taken turns to pick up the winners trophy at the schools cricket fiesta with PE winning it in 2010, 2012 and 2013 while Churchill were champions in 2011.
Kyle College, runners up to PE at last year’s event were in rampant form at this year’s tournament with a polished all round performance. Coached by former Zimbabwe national cricket team player Alester Maregwede, Kyle were deserving winners after reducing Churchill to nothing in the final.
Churchill won the toss, opted to bat and never recovered from losing their first wicket with 11 runs on the board to be dismissed for a paltry 60 runs in 16 overs, the highest contribution with the bat coming from opener Russell Mukore who scored 13 runs off seven deliveries.
Fast bowler Campbell Nyakudya picked up five wickets at the expense of 19 runs in four overs, off spinner Thabani Moyo and left arm spinner Dalubuhle Gonese picked up two wickets apiece.
Needing just three runs per over, Kyle made light work of their run chase, reaching their victory target in 8.5 overs having lost two wickets.
Opening batsman Lawrence Magwenzi top scored with 40 runs while Blessed Mutize was 19 not out.
Kyle were presented with the Comarton Consultants winners trophy by the guests of honour at the tournament, the Manuel family Moideen and his wife Magdelene. Churchill also walked away with the runners-up shield.
Daniel Zvidzai of PE was voted the best fielder, Gonese the best bowler, Patexx Zimindo of Churchill was voted the best batsman while the player with the best catch at the tournament was adjudged to be Tawanda Mhere of Kyle College. The four players were each presented with the Saleem Manuel floating trophies, donated by the Manuel family, named after their son Saleem who was the Petra first team vice-captain in 2010 and is now playing cricket while studying at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
Gonese walked away with the Sharne Mayers floating trophy for being the most outstanding player on display over the two days.
On their way to the final, Kyle won by 22 runs over PE while Churchill defeated fellow Harare school Hellenic by one wicket.
