Under-17 team hunt for Afro-Asia Twenty20 Cup

THE Zimbabwe Under-17 cricket team left for India yesterday to take part in the inaugural World Future League (WFL) Afro-Asia Twenty20 Cup that starts next Tuesday.

Former national team player Dirk Viljoen, who is Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the WFL, led the touring party that included coach Ian Buchart, team manager Dakarai Kuhlengisa and a squad of 13 players.

Zimbabwe will play neighbours South Africa and hosts India in group A while Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were pooled in group B.

According to WFL, the organisers of the tournament, all matches will be played at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad under floodlights.

India and South Africa will set the pace in Group A when they engage in the opening match on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe will be inactive the first day and will only have their first feel of the tournament the next day against South Africa.

St. George’s College student Malcom Lake will captain the Zimbabwe side that also include two of his schoolmates Alistair Mcleod and Devon Bell.

Top two teams from the two groups will proceed to the semi-finals next Friday with winners in group A facing runners up in group B and vice-versa.

Winners in the last four will clash in the finals next Saturday.

WFL is the world’s first Under-17 country based cricket league providing a platform for talented cricketers to compete at the International level.

According to a statement on the WFL website, there is a guaranteed prize money of US$100 000 of which, 50 percent of was allocated towards a fund named "WFL Cricket Scholarships".

Top performers in WFL tournaments will be offered cricket scholarships to play professional club cricket overseas for a season.

"The League’s objective is to identify and source talent from India and across the globe and offer young talented cricketers the opportunity to participate in tournaments organised in India and various cricket loving nations, that helps brighten their future.

"With the likes of Abdul Razzaq, Hashan Tillakaratne, Russel Arnold, Habibul Bashar, Nantie Hayward, Heath Streak, Dirk Viljoen and many more international cricket stars supporting the league as country ambassadors, it is definitely going to be a game changer as far as junior cricket is concerned — much like what the IPL did for international cricket," said a statement from the organisers.

The statement added that the success of the Twenty 20 Afro-Asia Cup would lead to the inaugural WFL Twenty 20 World Cup to feature 14 nations in December.

Our Juniors were once the best , I think its time we pull up our socks and develop the areas that were now in neglect . Besides the education system was now in shambles .Now that the country is in a period of hope we now need to get back and start up whatever programmes that were abandoned .
